The second season of Channel 5’s crime drama, Ellis, kicked off last night with the first part of a two-episode story. Sharon D. Clarke returns as DCI Ellis, investigating a complex murder case that centers around local businessman Peter Barron. The conclusion of the story airs tonight.
When Detective Ellis Clarke arrives in the small village of Ashenham to help the local police, she immediately jumps into the investigation, eager to take charge.
A key element of British crime dramas is the way suspicion constantly changes, focusing on different characters as new clues emerge. This is what makes them so thrilling. Ellis excels at captivating viewers by giving each suspect believable reasons for being involved.

This case is becoming increasingly complex due to the deceptive people at its center. They appear ordinary and respectable at first, but quickly reveal their hidden, darker sides when their secrets are exposed.
The show manages to stay engaging despite its slow moments, continually drawing viewers back in. The eventual reveal is well worth the wait and has significant consequences, but we won’t say more than that.
Away from the mystery, however, Ellis suffers from some of the same flaws as its first season.
What to Read Next
Clarke continues to skillfully balance empathy with the tough decisions her role demands, but her character still feels somewhat distant from the viewers.
The problems Ellis is having with her daughter seem intended to show us a softer, more human side of her, but it doesn’t quite work. It feels a bit superficial, and we still don’t really connect with her as a character.

Clarke’s character, Ellis, isn’t unique in feeling disconnected. This lack of connection seems to extend to the entire cast and their interactions with each other. For instance, the dynamic between Ellis and her colleague, DS Chet Harper (Andrew Gower), highlights this issue.
Although the story tries to create a connection between DS Harper and Ellis, like when Harper offers personal help, their relationship feels new and hasn’t fully developed yet – it should feel more solid. Even their heartwarming moments sometimes come across as unnatural, which diminishes their impact.
Despite its flaws, Ellis wasn’t difficult to watch. Clarke is a compelling lead, and while her team – including Harper – is a bit disorganized, that actually makes the show quite enjoyable, especially when paired with an interesting mystery.
Ellis season 2 premiered on Tuesday 10 March, and continues on Wednesday 11 March at 9pm on 5.
