The new crime drama, The Westies, set in the 1980s and about an Irish gang in New York City, will be released soon. A short preview trailer is now available.
The series is known for its realistic and fast-paced action, and features a strong cast. Academy Award winner JK Simmons plays Eamon Sweeney, a mentor figure to James ‘Jimmy’ Rourke, played by Tom Brittney (known from Grantchester).
The new series will premiere on MGM+ on July 12th. A short preview has been released, hinting at the show’s intense and violent themes, and featuring Sweeney talking about how she manages the gang members. Fans can also get a first glimpse of Simmons as her character in the image below.

The story of The Westies revolves around the building of the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Hell’s Kitchen and the potential for the gang to profit from it.
Even though the Westies gang faced overwhelming odds – fifty to one – against the five Italian Mafia families, their reputation for extreme violence and clever tactics allowed them to negotiate a shaky truce and share in the profits.

However, disagreements between the younger, more aggressive members and the established leaders could cause major problems, potentially drawing the Westies into the FBI’s ongoing investigation of the Italian mafia.
The show will also feature familiar faces including Titus Welliver from Bosch, Jessica Frances Dukes of Ozark, Allen Leech known for Downton Abbey, Stanley Morgan from Sexy Beast, Hamish Allan-Headley who appeared in Daredevil: Born Again, Sarah Bolger of Mayans MC, Vincent Walsh from The Fall, and Hilary McCormack of Happy Face.

Narcos‘ Chris Brancato and Godfather of Harlem‘s Michael Panes are behind the show as creators.
I’ve been working on The Westies for a long time now, and I’m so excited to finally share it with everyone! It’s a story about what people will do to get ahead, how fiercely loyal they are to each other, and the struggle for power, all happening in 1980s New York City.
The Westies will premiere on 12 July on MGM+.
