Grey’s Anatomy’s Kim Raver reveals how female co-stars helped her direct
As a long-time fan of Grey’s Anatomy, witnessing Kim Raver‘s journey behind the camera was truly inspiring! It’s heartening to see someone who started as an actor take on the director’s chair, especially when it comes to Shondaland productions, which have been pioneers in promoting diversity and creating opportunities for underrepresented groups.
Grey’s Anatomy star Kim Raver has opened up about directing on the show, (via People).
Since 2009, the actor has portrayed Dr Teddy Altman and now, in a shift of roles, she recently directed an episode for season 19. Reflecting upon this unique experience, Raver shared insights about how working on Shonda Rhimes’ show varies from other film sets.
“I came up in the business where there were just… there [were] a lot of men, which is great — love all of you,” she said at the D23 fan event, adding that she “didn’t get to see a lot of women doing a lot of the jobs.”
Afterward, Raver commended Shondaland for instigating an industry shift. She emphasized the chances given to women and crew members to work in key roles off-camera.
While seated as the director, she had the chance to observe other women fulfilling significant positions.
She reminisced that everyone encouraged her to give her all, a sensation both amazing and inspiring. Additionally, she had the privilege of witnessing other women taking on directorial roles, editing positions, writing duties, and even showrunning.
Discussing her journey to the role, Raver shared that she never gave up. Her dedication eventually bore fruit, leading to an opportunity where she could observe and learn from the multi-talented actress, director, and executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy, Debbie Allen.
Raver described it as if he were preparing for a performance at the Russian Ballet. In other words, just like when you’re supposed to be present but unnoticed, blending into the background without causing any disturbance.
She mentioned, “I truly enjoyed every moment, I absolutely adored it, I felt exceptionally ready, and was incredibly nurtured.”
The 21st season of Grey’s Anatomy is set to debut on ABC, airing at 10pm ET on Thursday, September 26, in the United States. If you want to catch up on earlier seasons, they are currently streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
