Grey’s Anatomy’s Ellen Pompeo reveals which line she really didn’t want to say
Actress Ellen Pompeo, who is known for her role in Grey’s Anatomy, admitted that she initially hesitated to deliver one of the series’ famous lines.
As a devoted fan, I’ve been captivated by Ellen Pompeo’s portrayal of Dr. Meredith Grey on ABC’s medical drama since 2005. However, after the 19th season in 2022, she seems to have reduced her appearances on the show.
On the popular podcast “Call Her Daddy”, Pompeo revealed that she objected to a particular conversation and plot point in a scene with Patrick Dempsey’s character, Derek Shepherd, where her character Meredith pleaded for him to depart from his marriage.

At one point, Pompeo expressed that there were many tasks he didn’t feel like doing. He explained, ‘I didn’t want to plead, ‘Select me, choose me, adore me.’ Instead, I found myself thinking, ‘Why should I do this? Why should I beg? Why should I?’ Essentially, you have to bite the bullet and just go ahead with it.
Later on, Pompeo acknowledged Shonda Rhimes for her determination in predicting that the line would resonate strongly, saying: “It turned out to be, as you know, an unparalleled success, a timeless classic. So, I’m not always the best forecaster of what will strike a chord.
Mike Pompeo, who’s not just a diplomat but also an executive producer of this show, has confessed that his 10-year-old daughter hasn’t seen it yet, despite her requests. He provided a chuckle-worthy explanation for the delay.
My 10-year-old is eager to watch it, but she’s not quite ready. However, many children in her class have already seen it,” said Pompeo, followed by a humorous comment: “I’d prefer my daughter didn’t catch me on TV in my underwear just yet. But apparently all her classmates have. So, that certainly makes for some interesting conversations during pick-up time.
Outside the realm of “Grey’s Anatomy”, Pompeo stars in “Good American Family” together with Mark Duplass and Imogen Faith Reid. This eight-episode limited series revolves around a family who become increasingly wary of their adopted child, raising questions about their child’s true origins.
In the United States, Grey’s Anatomy season 21 can be watched every Thursday at 10pm Eastern Time on ABC television network. For those living in the UK, previous seasons of the show are available for streaming on Disney+.
