Grey’s Anatomy star Sarah Drew says firing from show was “mean and unjust”

As a long-time fan of Grey’s Anatomy and an ardent supporter of Sarah Drew, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for her as she shares her feelings about her departure from the show. The way she was let go must have been a tough pill to swallow, especially given the immense love and support she received from both the fans and her fellow cast members.

Grey’s Anatomy star Sarah Drew has suggested that her firing from the show was “mean and unjust”.

In 2018, the actor departed from the series playing Dr April Kepner, but she’s returned for a few guest roles since then. During her departure, Drew described it as “attending one’s own funeral” in an interview with Vulture.

She further expressed, “In an incredibly heartwarming manner,” back then. “The overwhelming show of support from fans, my co-stars, and the crew, upon my departure was simply astounding. I refer to it as a ‘love bombing’.

It’s similar to a situation where someone terminates the relationship before it concludes, and it wasn’t your decision. In such cases, others often express their affection for you, sharing reasons why they care about you deeply and what significant role you played in their lives.

Now, Drew has elaborated on her comments in a new chat on the Call It What It Is podcast.

What I intended to convey was… [I] was unexpectedly dismissed in a manner that felt harsh and unfair, which resulted in such an overwhelming display of affection that it seemed as if everyone around was expressing all their warm feelings towards you.

Digital Spy has reached out to ABC and Shondaland for comment.

During the podcast discussion, the actor went on to explain that she found her experience as a series regular less restrictive compared to her guest roles, expressing relief since her departure.

She openly acknowledged that she has absolutely no emotional connection to the show whatsoever. Consequently, she experiences tranquility since, while participating in the show, one can never predict the unexpected.

As a fan, I’m always aware that my favorite show might decide to abandon my beloved storyline, or I could unintentionally upset someone influential who could then affect the series. It’s a rollercoaster of uncertainty.

Drew added: “I come in merely to greet, with no worries or needs regarding that particular set any longer.

I’m no longer dependent on them for my well-being, prosperity, or happiness. Returning feels incredibly liberating, as if I’m saying, ‘Hello! This place is a great destination to revisit.’

In the coming weeks, you’ll catch the actor on the Hallmark+ series titled “Mistletoe Murders“. This festive mystery is set to debut soon.

Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC in the US. Previous seasons are streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
