Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey planned to reunite with Eric Dane on new show before his death

Patrick Dempsey shared that he and his former Grey’s Anatomy colleague, Eric Dane, were scheduled to appear together in his new series, Memory of a Killer, before Dane’s passing.

Patrick Dempsey, famous for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, had hoped to work with Eric Dane, who played Dr. Mark Sloan, on a film called Memory of a Killer, envisioning them as brothers. Sadly, this won’t happen now, as Dane recently passed away after a battle with ALS, a currently incurable motor neuron disease.

“We were expecting it. I just didn’t realise it was going to happen so quickly,” Dempsey told Metro.

His representative contacted us, and we were attempting to find a solution. It was just incredibly surprising how quickly the illness worsened.

In the film Memory of a Killer, Dane was originally cast as the brother of Dempsey’s character, Angelo, a hitman. The role required Dane to portray a character also newly diagnosed with advanced dementia, mirroring Angelo’s own condition in the story.

Dempsey fondly remembered Dane, describing him as both a talented actor and a wonderful person to collaborate with. He expressed his deep sadness at the loss and sent his condolences to Dane’s family, celebrating the lasting impact he made.

The actor explained that, despite being very ill, he dedicated his remaining energy to raising awareness about his condition, which she found incredibly admirable and courageous.

“He stayed strong and he fought as long as he could. Now he’s in a peaceful place.”

Dane, who more recently played Cal Jacobs on Euphoria, shared his diagnosis publicly in April 2025.

Last year, he shared with People magazine that he’s been diagnosed with ALS. He expressed gratitude for the support of his family as they face the challenges ahead.

On that occasion, Dane also said he’d be returning to the set of Euphoria season 3 soon.

I’m grateful to be continuing my work and excited to be back on the set of Euphoria next week. I would appreciate it if my family and I could have some privacy right now.
