Grey's Anatomy star Camilla Luddington says CW casting director rejected her because she was 'not pretty enough'

As a devoted fan of these strong and resilient women, I am utterly awestruck by their journey in Hollywood. Camilla Luddington and Jessica Capshaw, two extraordinary talents who have graced our screens for years on Grey’s Anatomy, have now shared heart-wrenching stories of being rejected based on their looks.

For over ten years, Camilla Luddington, known for her role as Dr. Jo Wilson, has been opening up about some terrifying experiences she faced during auditions.

As a die-hard fan of Grey’s Anatomy, I can’t help but share this fascinating tidbit: At the tender age of 40, the radiant star of our beloved show confided in her former castmate, Jessica Capshaw, that a CW casting director once dismissed her because they deemed me ‘not pretty enough.’ Can you believe it? This revelation only deepens my admiration for this phenomenal actress who shines on screen despite such hurdles.

She began their conversation on the Call It What It Is podcast by saying, “Have you ever been passed over for a role due to your appearance? I have a related story.”

Luddington mentioned that she had once auditioned for a TV show on The CW years ago, but unfortunately didn’t secure the role. The casting director commented that she wasn’t considered attractive enough for that specific network.

She reminisced, “It’s quite amusing, I found myself saying something like ‘Oh well, never mind,’ and then moving forward.”

Luddington expressed that at that particular moment, she felt as though she couldn’t accept the opportunity because she had encountered numerous rejections in her career and found herself thinking, “You’re just another ‘no’, join the queue of rejections.”

The British actress has gone on to portray Dr. Jo Wilson on Grey’s Anatomy since season 9 in 2012.

47-year-old Capshaw retorted, “Pardon me, CW! But who decides that, to start with?” She also recounted a similar encounter during her auditions.

In the beginning of my professional journey, I admitted that I was let go from a position due to not meeting the ideal weight standards for the job.

She shared that she had tried out for a romantic comedy role, which could have been a significant leap for her career, as she recalled.

Capshaw mentioned, “I was eager for it, put in a tremendous amount of effort, and then went ahead and gave an audition.”

Capshaw pointed out that the director was a very pleasant individual who complimented her by saying she was exceptional and was his top pick for the movie. However, her representative had some important information to share.

According to her account, her manager stated, “Alright, let me explain. The studio head believes that you would benefit from losing weight.” She emphasized that he had suggested this, but didn’t elaborate on why the studio head felt this way.

The actress said she was given between 10 days and two weeks to lose the weight.

Capshaw candidly expressed, ‘The situation was absolutely absurd.’ In conclusion, I was offered a 10-day window, went to meet the studio boss, and I’m not sure if it was due to my weight—perhaps I wasn’t thin enough—but ultimately, I didn’t secure the job.

From my personal perspective, it was ironic indeed that the very individual who struggled with disordered eating, someone widely recognized in the business for their own body image issues, upheld such a rigid standard of beauty – one that demanded thinness. This experience has made me realize how deeply ingrained societal expectations can be and how they often fail to consider the personal struggles of those they impact most. It’s crucial that we challenge and redefine these standards to foster a more inclusive, empathetic, and understanding environment in our industry.

As a connoisseur of all things entertainment, I’ve had the privilege of gracing the small screen as Arizona Roberts on Grey’s Anatomy from 2009 to 2018. This year, I stepped back into the scrubs for season 20, bringing this beloved character to life once more.

In June, Capshaw and Luddington launched their “Call It What It Is” podcast following their friendship blossoming while working together on the same TV series.
