Warning: This post contains spoilers for Grey’s Anatomy‘s Season 22 fall finale.
The fall finale of Grey’s Anatomy started with a surprising interruption – Owen and Nora were caught in a private moment by Teddy and her daughters. I expected a dramatic episode, but instead, the show seemed to hold back, leaving me questioning what happened to the intense storylines we used to see at Grey Sloan Memorial.
That might seem unlikely, but it accurately describes where things stand with the doctors’ relationships on Grey’s Anatomy. However, the episode did introduce some compelling new interactions that I’m hoping will be explored further when the show returns next year, even though I worry the storylines might just keep repeating themselves.
The latest episode of Grey’s Anatomy set up a dramatic situation for Jo Wilson (Camila Luddington), whose labor began shortly after Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack) was injured earlier in the season. Meanwhile, Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) expressed her frustration with Richard Webber’s (James Pickens Jr.) behavior as the acting Chief of Surgery.
Hunt & Altman Finally Face Their Breakup, Without A Solid Endpoint
Their Difficult Relationship Is Going To Remain Unresolved

The latest episode of Grey’s Anatomy immediately threw Hunt and Altman into crisis mode when they arrived at the scene of a bus accident, where a cyclist named Maisy was trapped. Although clearly annoyed with each other – Owen felt his privacy was violated, and Teddi seemed to bother him in general – the two doctors had to work together to free their patient from under the bus, though their efforts weren’t entirely smooth.
Maisy constantly brings up her past breakup – which now seems silly – and fixates on the rocky relationship between Teddi and Owen. This is especially true when Altman makes a dangerous, impulsive decision that puts both her and Owen in jeopardy.
Bringing Maisy back to Grey Sloan didn’t magically fix things between Teddy and Owen. Honestly, watching them together was just…awkward. You could feel a fight brewing, and a part of me thought they needed to have it out. But instead, they had a tearful conversation that felt like it only went so far. They didn’t really resolve anything, and it was incredibly frustrating as a viewer. It felt like they were right back where they started, stuck in this endless loop of unresolved issues, and it just didn’t deliver the emotional release I was hoping for.
Jo’s Pregnancy Complications Quickly Became Life-Threatening
Her Heart Failure Will Continue When Grey’s Returns In January 2026

Even though we knew Jo’s pregnancy would be at risk during the first half of Grey’s Anatomy season 22, I tried to avoid thinking about it. After everything Jo has been through, she really deserves happiness with Link and their daughters, but it looks like things won’t be easy for them.
I’ve been following Jo’s story, and it turns out she’s been battling peripartum cardiomyopathy throughout everything. It got really scary during the surgery – as they were trying to put in a heart pump to help her, one of the babies started to get really sick. Ben raced off to find more help, and Dr. Ndugu was working so hard to keep Jo stable. It was a really intense situation.
Although Jo is expected to survive, her current storyline feels very similar to a familiar plot from Grey’s Anatomy where a character’s life is in danger. Since she’s almost certainly going to be fine, repeatedly putting her through intense hardship feels unnecessary and repetitive as the show goes on.
Grey Sloan Memorial’s Staff Seem To Be Building New Dynamics
Leaning In Could Improve The Show’s Pacing

The episode also highlights developing tensions between several characters: Dr. Benson Kwan and new fellow Dr. Kavita Mohanty, Dr. Lucas Adams and returning intern Dani Warren, and Simone Griffith and Wes Bryant. While Griffith and Warren share a clear connection, the surprising kiss between Kwan and Mohanty really stood out.
Harry Shum Jr. and Anita Kalathara have a captivating chemistry that reminds me of the early dynamic between Alex Karev and Addison Montgomery – it’s playfully flirty and unexpected. The way their characters first connected – a bold move by Kwan in an elevator – was exciting and makes me eager to see what happens with them next season.
Webber’s Cancer Diagnosis Was A Shock, But Felt Underscored By Big Swings
Bailey’s Reaction Will Surely Build Into The Season’s Second Half

The fall finale of Grey’s Anatomy ended with a surprising reveal about Webber. Throughout the day, he’d frustrated Bailey with his bossy decisions and difficult behavior. When Bailey finally confronted him, Webber shared that he has cancer, though details were scarce. While shocking, the news felt somewhat overshadowed by everything else happening in the episode.
Grey’s Anatomy is working hard to create compelling stories to keep viewers engaged. However, while the show is great at creating drama, it sometimes feels overly dramatic. I’m hoping the second half of season 22, starting January 8th, will be a bit more subtle in its approach to storytelling.
