Grey’s Anatomy season 21 unveils first look at Jesse Williams return

As a die-hard Grey’s Anatomy fan with over a decade of emotional investment in the lives of these characters, I can’t help but feel like I’ve been reunited with an old friend in Jackson Avery. The way they’ve brought him back with a serious expression and a mother who seems to be causing trouble once again, it’s like picking up a book you thought you’d finished reading only to find a new chapter has been added.

Grey’s Anatomy has released a new look at season 21, including the return of Jesse Williams.

The actor plays Dr Jackson Avery in the medical series, but he left the main cast in 2021. In the new footage, Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey is certainly glad to see him back, although he’s got quite the serious look on his face.

The teaser also shows Jackson’s mother Catherine Fox stepping on more toes. Miranda Bailey isn’t having any of her nonsense however, as we see her give Catherine a very satisfying slap. Meredith gives her a bit of cheek at the end too, just for good measure.

Beyond just Jackson’s comeback, the latest sneak peek hints at Sydney Heron’s return as well. Apart from this teaser, it’s also confirmed that season 21 will include Natalia Morales’ character Dr Monica Beltran. She is set to appear in episode 2 and continue for at least five episodes afterwards.

In a more casual and straightforward manner: Scott Speedman, the actor portraying Meredith’s love interest, Nick Marsh, is set to appear in no less than five episodes.

Actress Floriana Lima, known for her role in Supergirl, is set to appear on Grey’s Anatomy starting from the second episode. Her character, Norma, shares a past with Owen Hunt.

Last year, discussing the possibility of returning, Williams expressed: “I’ve always held a soft spot for that place. I am always open to considering the prospect of returning there, either as a director or making an appearance. The opportunity is there for me. It feels somewhat like a reunion, more like a return to my alma mater.

I can hardly contain my excitement! It won’t be long now until I get to dive back into the world of Grey’s Anatomy. In just a fortnight, season two will premiere, and I simply can’t wait!

The 21st season of Grey’s Anatomy will debut on ABC, airing Thursday, September 26 at 10pm Eastern Time in the United States. If you want to catch up on previous seasons, they are currently streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
