Grey’s Anatomy recap: Worth the risk
heads up: The summary I’m about to share divulges key plot points from the sixteenth episode of Grey’s Anatomy season 21 titled “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.” Proceed with caution if you want to avoid spoilers.
Experiencing a thrilling suspense moment, like the classic cliffhanger in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, can leave you both soothed and disturbed by the series’ reliable blend of medical drama after 20 years. Frankly, I don’t enjoy being kept in suspense for a whole week or longer. However, I can’t help but appreciate it. That’s why we continue to tune in. ‘Grey’s’ never falters in its commitment to providing hope followed by anguish, and this week is no exception.
Jo and Link haven’t decided on the location for their upcoming wedding. Surprisingly, they aren’t arguing about it. This is fortunate since Link supports Jo wholeheartedly, as she has been diagnosed with severe endometriosis that has affected her bones. Their wedding is imminent, taking place on a Thursday – an unusual choice for a wedding day. Although surgery may not completely resolve the issue, it could allow her to walk down the aisle without pain. After the surgery, Jo contemplates canceling the wedding due to her discomfort. However, she finds out that a suitable venue has become available for a last-minute wedding in four days. Link agrees to proceed with the impromptu celebration. Given Grey’s Anatomy’s reputation for chaotic weddings, this upcoming event should be quite intriguing!
In Amelia’s employ, Simone and Lucas find themselves. Although Simone doubts the venture is safe, she hesitates to voice her concerns due to past difficulties when confronting Amelia. Meanwhile, Lucas shares that Blue mentioned needing a new roommate. Simone admits her reservations about moving too swiftly in their relationship due to her previous experience’s bitter end. Disappointed, Lucas leaves, not over her preference for a gradual pace, but because she didn’t initially share her feelings with him.
In simpler terms, Blue is assigned to guide Bailey’s potential intern around the hospital. Impressed by her confidence and achievements, Blue vows to help persuade her to choose Grey Sloan for her internship. The intern insists on visiting the ICU, and during their tour, two emergency situations occur simultaneously. They both jump in to assist, but when Blue leaves momentarily, he returns to find the intern attempting to insert a chest tube incorrectly. He performs the procedure himself, then scolds her for overstepping. Bailey later learns of this altercation and later reprimands Blue, as the potential intern has decided not to join Grey Sloan after this incident. However, Bailey is impressed by his explanation but still refuses to allow him to assist in her upcoming surgery.
In a critical situation after a car crash, Winston and Jules treat the patient, yet both express doubt towards the patient’s father. When Jules sees him taking his son’s rental money, she considers intervening, but Winston advises against it. During the operation to mend the patient’s lung, Jules reveals that she understands the struggles of having a poor father figure. This resonates with Winston, leading him to confront the drunken father later outside the hospital, nearly inciting a physical altercation. Jules intervenes again, and the father admits to his complex relationship with his dad, usually suppressing these emotions. Feeling emotionally drained, he opts for an off-day the following shift and assigns Jules to Richard instead. However, Jules becomes worried about their bond and wonders if their moment on the rooftop truly held significance.
In a surprising turn of events, Amelia consents to conduct a highly dangerous operation on a 9-year-old child, despite reservations from her interns, Lucas and Simone, as well as one of the girl’s parents. Both sets of parents eventually decide to proceed with the surgery, although they are clearly apprehensive. Throughout the procedure, Amelia encounters several challenging moments, but it appears to be a success. However, the following morning, the patient’s father panics and summons Lucas because the child is unable to move or speak. The scene concludes dramatically with a code blue announcement, only a brief while after Amelia shares her relief with Monica that Derek would not have been able to perform this surgery effectively, and she was unsure if she could have either.
If this episode were the season finale, I believe it could have ended on such a suspenseful note. Fortunately, or perhaps not so much, there are still two episodes remaining, and it seems we might encounter an even more gripping cliffhanger soon. Watching Grey’s Anatomy, they promised us excitement; instead, they delivered deceit. Every single one of them!
