Grey’s Anatomy is coming back to hurt us again

After a considerable wait, ABC airs the second half of Season 21 for “Grey’s Anatomy” tonight (March 6). While pauses in network TV aren’t as excruciating as those on most streaming platforms, let’s face it; a return to Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital is seldom a joyous occasion. And truth be told, are we ever prepared for a “Grey’s” comeback to be anything but tumultuous?

Should you require a brief recap – containing spoilers for the 8th episode of Season 21 titled “Drop It Like It’s Hot” from Grey’s Anatomy – the previous scene concluded in a familiar fashion, with a dramatic cliffhanger. Jo and Alex have predominantly been evading an armed robbery or attempting to stay calm under threat, and it appears this tension will continue into the next segment. The final gunshot in the episode wounded someone, but the identity of the victim remains unknown (for now).

From the trailer we’ve just seen, it appears that Jo is facing some difficulties. Whether it’s her personal situation or the well-being of her babies, it seems they might be in a challenging position. I won’t launch into my opinion about how this show tends to put pregnant characters through hardships and could use a break, but rest assured, similar thoughts may surface soon (keep watching).

As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that the trailer for this upcoming series leaves me questioning its authenticity. It seems to hint at the character played by Adams being on the receiving end of a critical gunshot wound, but as we’ve come to expect from trailers, they often mislead us intentionally. Could it be that the shooter is actually someone else? The tense struggle at the end of episode 8 was as ambiguous as one would anticipate from a midseason finale. At Grey’s, it seems some things remain frustratingly constant.

It seems quite possible that one character won’t survive the series “Hit the Floor.” On the other hand, Owen appears to be treading on dangerous romantic ground with someone other than his spouse – a plot twist I’d prefer to forget, yet it persists.

Season 21 of Grey’s Anatomy returns tonight at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT on ABC.
