Grey’s Anatomy bosses to bring new British period drama to ITV
As a dedicated fan of historical dramas and a connoisseur of gripping narratives that seamlessly blend past and present, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming series “Majesty”. Having been captivated by the genius of Joan Rater, Tony Phelan, and William Harper in their work on “Grey’s Anatomy“, I can hardly wait to see their magical touch on the life of Queen Elizabeth I.
Previously known as the creators of “Grey’s Anatomy”, Joan Rater, Tony Phelan, and William Harper now lead a new British historical series titled “Majesty”. This series delves into the life story of Queen Elizabeth I.
2025 marks the commencement of our filming; this series offers a fresh perspective on Elizabeth I’s early life at Henry VIII’s court. The narrative is inspired by various conspiracy theories that swirled around young Elizabeth.
As a dedicated admirer, I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming series directed by James Strong, who has previously brought us gripping tales like “Broadchurch” and “Mr Bates vs The Post Office”. This new production is set to grace our screens on ITV at a future date. Further details about the cast will be revealed in due time.
In a statement, William Harper, Joan Rater, and Tony Phelan described “Majesty” as an emotionally charged, humorous, and modern-feeling alternate history tale. It revolves around three individuals who struggle to survive while concealing a revelation that, if exposed, would drastically shake England’s very core.
The three of them expressed that the performance offers an enjoyable exploration of history, helping us understand ourselves better, and it promises to be a delightful depiction of individuals passionate about the common welfare unexpectedly gaining influence to bring about change.
ITV’s director of drama Polly Hill described the story as “intriguing and thought-provoking”.
Hill expressed great joy in revealing ‘Majesty’ and collaborating with James and his crew, who are crafting a captivating and thought-provoking tale. ‘Majesty’ is exactly the kind of dramatic piece ITV aims to showcase as we persistently work towards delivering top-notch and ambitiously creative prime-time dramas for our British viewers.
The director, Strong, expresses his excitement about presenting a Tudor drama that resonates with contemporary viewers, stating: “There is no greater joy for me than to be sharing this bold and innovative production on-screen.
He added: “The brilliant scripts are a directors’ dream as we get to re-imagine and recreate an iconic piece of English history and tell a period story that looks stunning but also feels modern and relevant to today’s viewer.”
Majesty doesn’t have a release date yet.
