Grey’s Anatomy boss Shonda Rhimes responds to Eric Dane being left out of Oscars tribute

As a huge fan of Grey’s Anatomy, I was really upset to notice that Eric Dane wasn’t included in the Oscars’ In Memoriam segment last night. It’s just so sad that we lost him recently, and I was shocked to see him left out. Thankfully, Shona Rhimes, the show’s creator, has spoken up about it, which is good to hear.

The actor was well-known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan, or ‘McSteamy,’ on a popular medical TV show. He’s also been in movies like X-Men: The Last Stand and the recent Bad Boys film.

When Dane’s name wasn’t included in the tribute to those who had passed, shown during the broadcast, Entertainment Tonight asked Shonda Rhimes for a response.

She believes he doesn’t need to be a famous actor, and when the Emmy Awards happen, his talent will finally be fully recognized and celebrated as it deserves.

It’s understandable the Oscars focused on films and remembering those we lost this year. However, Eric was a truly special figure in television, and I’m eager to see how they honor his legacy.

Last night’s In Memoriam segment honored several figures from the entertainment industry, including actors Robert Redford, Catherine O’Hara, and Val Kilmer, as well as director Rob Reiner.

The 2026 Oscars’ online memorial included both Dane and James Van Der Beek, who had recently passed away and was famous for his work on television.

Shonda Rhimes shared with the publication that actor Eric was an amazing person, and she still thinks of him as if he’s still here because she’s having a hard time accepting his passing.

He was a truly remarkable person, and we’re all heartbroken by his passing. His loss is deeply felt by everyone at Shondaland and the Grey’s Anatomy team, and those who knew him will remember him as a kind and generous soul.

“I don’t know [if] everybody understands just how amazing he was.”

The Oscars aired on ITV1 in the UK and can be streamed on ITVX.
