‘Gremlins 3’ is real: Steven Spielberg, Chris Columbus reuniting for 2027 Mogwai movie

Warner Bros. Discovery announced Thursday that a third “Gremlins” movie is officially happening. It’s planned for release in theaters on November 19, 2027, before the holiday season. The new film will bring back Chris Columbus, who wrote the original “Gremlins,” and will be produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, the company behind the first two movies.

Chris Columbus will be directing and producing the next “Gremlins” movie, with Steven Spielberg returning as an executive producer, according to Zaslav. This will be the first film in the “Gremlins” series in over three decades. Columbus is writing the screenplay alongside Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who previously directed “Final Destination: Bloodlines.”

In 1984, director Joe Dante brought the strange and mischievous Mogwai to life in the film “Gremlins.” These furry creatures, with their big eyes and ears, came with three very important rules: never get them wet, never feed them after midnight, and keep them away from bright light. Both the original film and its 1990 sequel (written by Charles S. Haas) show what happens when those first two rules are broken – the Mogwai multiply out of control or transform into destructive Gremlins.

The movies “Gremlins” featured Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates, with Howie Mandel providing the voice for the lovable Mogwai named Gizmo, and Frank Welker voicing the mischievous gremlins.

I was so thrilled to see the Gremlins back in the spotlight! It’s been ages since a movie, but they finally got a new story with the animated series ‘Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai’ last year, and it was fantastic!

Despite mixed results, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav expressed optimism, stating the company is feeling confident about the future.

This animated series, created by Tze Chun, explores the backstory of the Mogwai creatures, briefly introduced in the original ‘Gremlins’ film by the character Mr. Wing (played by Keye Luke). ‘Secrets of the Mogwai’ focuses on the connection between Mr. Wing and Gizmo, a relationship that became central to the ‘Gremlins’ movies.

In 2023, Brendan Hay, an executive producer on the series, explained to The Times that choosing 1920s China as the setting for “Secrets of the Mogwai” allowed them to really explore the brief backstory of the Mogwai as shown in the original films.

Hay noted that the creatures in the original films were clearly Chinese in origin, but that aspect wasn’t fully explored. He sees this as an opportunity to delve deeper into that heritage, connecting the Mogwai to existing Chinese mythology and creating a richer, more imaginative world for them.

During an appearance at Comic-Con Manchester this summer, actor Zach Galligan suggested a new “Gremlins” movie is being developed. He mentioned on TikTok that a script has been written and Warner Bros. is very enthusiastic about the project, but it’s currently awaiting approval from Steven Spielberg.

Warner Bros. Discovery has recently revived several popular franchises, and “Gremlins” is the newest addition. Other examples of these revivals include “The Lord of the Rings,” “Harry Potter,” and “Practical Magic.”
