Greg Rutherford reveals the big promise he’s made to his fiancée Susie Verrill as he discusses brutal Dancing On Ice injury and mental struggle of adapting to life after retirement
As I delve into the life of Greg Rutherford, a former Olympic athlete turned reality TV star, it’s evident that his journey is nothing short of inspiring. From conquering the long jump at the 2012 London Olympics to embracing the challenges of various reality shows, he has demonstrated an unparalleled resilience and zest for life.
Greg Rutherford has disclosed the pledge he’s given to his partner Susie Verrill, speaking about his painful Dancing on Ice accident and adjusting to post-retirement life.
The 37-year-old Olympic gold medalist, who retired from athletics in 2018, shared his struggles with mental challenges that athletes often experience when they step away from their sport. He felt like a burden after a mishap on a BBC competition left him feeling humiliated.
In my role with Marella Cruises, I’m committed to aiding Brits in enhancing the five vital hormones that foster happiness. Reflecting on my journey, I acknowledged how the absence of the thrill of live performance had me unintentionally overexerting myself, leading to physical strain, following the unfortunate incident on TV.
In an interview with TopMob, he shared: ‘I don’t yearn for the activities I used to engage in. My career surpassed my expectations of success, and I am incredibly proud of what I accomplished, but I no longer crave the process of preparing for it.’
Perhaps it’s the absence of a live audience that I’m feeling, and this could explain why I’ve taken part in various performances throughout the years – to relive the thrill and intensity of live performance.
He noted: ‘For athletes, it’s challenging when their training ends as they face a significant period of adjustment. This is why traveling is crucial; it aids in understanding the value of socializing and stepping out of one’s comfort zone again. Without this, one can easily fall into a routine.’
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’d share my journey: In 2016, the long jump titan graced the stage of Strictly Come Dancing, and more recently, took a spin on Dancing on Ice this year. However, circumstances compelled me to step back from both these engaging experiences.
During a daring move on the ice, Greg sustained a severe injury, resulting in two bulged discs and a torn abdominal muscle as he jumped over the legs of experienced performer Colin Grafton.
The bizarre incident saw him left on the ice for 10 minutes after ‘effectively giving himself a C-section’, undergoing surgery in March.
He continued: ‘Surgery was four months ago and I’m still recovering it was a shock to the system I’d gone from feeling really great to then losing all of that. My body was battered.
In order to be cautious, I need to bear in mind that I’m getting older, which means my recuperation period takes longer compared to before. I’m no longer able to bounce back as quickly as I once did, and I don’t experience the same energy levels.
I recently made a commitment to Suzie that I won’t take on any additional tasks. This doesn’t discourage me, but it has made me realize the situation. It’s not just about me; Suzie will be taking care of me for a week since I can’t do anything else.
‘You become a massive liability, you have to bare that in mind. I’m more conscious of everyone else around me now.’
This week, Greg came back from a voyage with Marella. During the trip, he engaged in various novel experiences such as a jeep adventure in Turkey, wine tasting steeped in culture in Cyprus, and interacting with others to enhance his feelings of happiness and escape a slump.
As he continues to seek out new activities, he acknowledged his desire to take on fresh challenges for charity. Regarding television appearances, he admitted that he feels he has exhausted many options as he has already participated in most of them, and jokingly suggested that viewers might be tired of seeing him.
One potential rephrasing could be: “One challenge with certain reality TV shows is that they consume so much time that it leaves little room for other activities.
He expressed his preference for tasks that test his limits, hinting at the possibility of participating in a marathon. However, he also quipped about wanting to unwind, at least until the holiday season is over.
Collaborating with Marella Cruises, Greg is embarking on a journey to inspire national joy by experimenting with the ‘Happy Hormone’ formula developed by the University of Sheffield’s Wellbeing Professor, aboard the Marella Discovery cruise ship.
