As a seasoned athlete who has faced numerous challenges and triumphs throughout my career, I can certainly empathize with Greg Rutherford’s recent struggles. His story of resilience is truly inspiring, as he bravely battles through pain and adversity to keep moving forward.

It’s been reported that Greg Rutherford, who had struggled with health issues, is currently basking in a picturesque vacation in France with his partner Susie Verrill.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I can share a personal anecdote that resonates with athletes like the track and field icon I’m referring to. During the memorable Paris Olympics, I found myself grappling with a case of food poisoning so severe it could only be described as ‘unbearably nasty’. This ordeal led me to ‘vomit violently’, a rather intense experience that no one wishes to encounter, especially during such a significant event.

Over the past few months, the former athlete has faced a series of misfortunes following their stint on ITV’s Dancing On Ice. This included an unfortunate incident where they accidentally tore open their stomach during skating, requiring surgery. Later, they were diagnosed with whooping cough.

But now Greg has recovered and has been enjoying a well-deserved holiday with his family.

On Thursday, the athlete posted a collection of pictures on Instagram for his 200,000 followers to see.

He posted a loved-up snap with Susie, planting a kiss on her head as she beamed at the camera while the couple posed on the top of a mountain.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, let me share an insight from my day. I recently captured a moment during a mid-hike break with some of my dear family members basking under the sun’s warm embrace. Later on, I couldn’t resist snapping another picture, this time featuring my energetic nine-year-old son Milo, swinging high above a park playground on a climbing frame.

He finished off the adorable Instagram post with a photo of Susie enjoying a cold beer in the shade.

He captioned his post: ‘Hike day yesterday! A nice little uphill 4k from Le Bettex in the sunshine and the reward of insane views, a park and restaurant at the top’.

His holiday comes after Greg was left bed ridden after filming a podcast episode.

At the beginning of the month, Greg turned to Instagram and recorded himself in his hotel room, saying: “Hi there, everyone. I thought I’d share a quick update. I’ve just had my first podcast recording with Sonya, it was a lot of fun.”

However, I fell ill with food poisoning last evening. I’ve been feeling quite dreadful and this is one of the worst I’ve felt in a long while.

‘I’ve been puking, like violently projectile vomiting, not to get really in depth with everybody.

Today marks my first day in Paris, which I spent resting on my bed during the morning, recording the initial show, and now I’m back in bed prior to our next recording in just a couple of hours. Oh, how terrible food poisoning can be.

His latest string of misfortunes occurred following the traumatic incident where a skylight in his house shattered last month, leaving him terrified and shaken.

The Olympian described the aftermath of a terrifying event, revealing broken glass fragments scattered throughout his lounge area.

He admitted that he was still ‘shaking’ after the window suddenly shattered, only moments after his children had been sat under it and voiced his complete shock and relief that no one had been hurt.

While capturing the shattered glass pieces strewn on the couch and floor below, he narrated: “One of the scariest incidents happened – it seemed like one of our skylights up here suddenly burst.”

I was simply standing in the kitchen, watching television mounted on the wall. Suddenly, there was a loud noise, and shattered glass flew everywhere.

Sharing the story of Milo’s narrow miss, Greg mentioned: “Let me tell you, just two minutes prior, Milo was right here working on his school assignments. I suggested, ‘What a beautiful day, why don’t you step outside onto the balcony?'”

‘Thank God I did that because if not, I can’t even imagine what could have happened.’

Greg panned up to show the light above and mused: ‘I have no idea if it’s the sun that’s heated it up, and it’s happened, or if something like this happens. I cannot explain to you how terrifying…’

Later on, he described the near miss he experienced by stating, “Today, I was constantly coming in and going out as I was tidying up. In the last thirty minutes alone, I must have passed this spot at least fifty times.”

A shaken up Greg concluded: ‘I don’t know. What a harrowing thing to happen.’

Afterward, he shared a detailed image of the couch that his kids had just occupied, revealing it was now littered with shards of broken glass due to the incident.

Greg captioned the eerie picture: ‘The kids were sat just here before. Can’t stop shaking!’

The father-of-three also recently broke his phone while recovering from a bad bout of whooping cough, that forced him to miss the TV BAFTAs.

Afterward, it was disclosed that their cherished pet dog, Gus, had advanced cancer, and the family was using this time to spend their final moments with him.

Earlier this year, Greg had shared that he and his family have been experiencing some challenging times, after the painful incident on Dancing On Ice which he suffered.

Due to an injury he suffered during rehearsals, he ended up having to withdraw from the ITV show finale, eventually disclosing that he had torn his abdominal muscles.

Following some tough weeks for our family due to an injury, he decided to share on Instagram Stories: “Currently, we’re going through a rough patch, but I’m coping by cooking. Thank you for your kind messages of support.”

Following my recent abdominal surgery, I’ve been left with an impressive scar – one that serves as a testament to the journey I’ve taken. And let me tell you, the post-operative swelling was nothing short of extraordinary! But hey, it’s all part of the process when it comes to self-improvement and embracing change.

Sharing several candid snaps, he wrote: ‘A little stomach update… I’m almost 4 weeks post op now and feeling so much better.

The wound has been completely healed, and I’m able to move about with minimal discomfort. Picture 2 illustrates the remarkable reduction in swelling that initially occurred.

“I’m still struggling to contract my ab muscles correctly, but I’m working on it. Post-op, I’ve gained a significant amount of weight, and once I’m prepared, I plan to start exercising to slim down… possibly even lace up the skates again.”

Greg disclosed the nature of his severe Dancing On Ice injury only on his way to the hospital for an operation.

The athlete said ‘effectively gave myself a C-section’ when he tried to skate through the legs of professional Colin Grafton in rehearsals.

He told fans: ‘Today is surgery day. Loads of people have been asking “what happened?”

Due to being quite occupied and still in the process of healing from my injury prior to the surgery, I haven’t had the chance to discuss it yet.

Essentially, I stumbled and fell headfirst between Colin’s legs, which resulted in me tearing multiple abdominal muscles and herniating as well. In other words, I accidentally performed a self-C-section.

‘So yes, it was horribly painful. It needs to be operated on today and then I’ll be properly on the mend. It was very painful, pretty horrible.’

The contestant was prepared to face off against Ryan Thomas, Adele Roberts, and Miles Nazaire in a fierce competition for the prize.

In a whirlwind of excitement, I glided my way to triumph at the Dancing on Ice finale in 2024, standing victorious hand-in-hand with my incredible partner, Amani Fancy.

As for me, I took to social media to post a video of my performance of the Bolero with Vanessa James, expressing my disappointment and feeling a little broken-hearted over missing the finale.
