Greg Kihn, “Jeopardy” singer and Bay Area rock fixture, dies at 75
As a long-time music enthusiast who grew up in the vibrant 80s rock scene, I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Greg Kihn, the iconic singer-songwriter known for his chart-topping hit “Jeopardy.” Born in Baltimore and making a name for himself in the Bay Area, Greg’s unique blend of folk, classic rock, blues, and pop made him a standout in the industry. His music was not just a soundtrack to my youth but also a source of joy and inspiration.
Legendary musician Greg Kihn, known for his chart-topping song “Jeopardy,” which peaked at number two, has sadly passed away. He was 75 years old.
On Tuesday, Kihn passed away due to Alzheimer’s disease, as stated on his official website, which shared the news on Thursday.
In the ’80s Bay Area rock scene, Kihn stood out as a prominent figure, particularly recognized for his band Greg Kihn Band’s lively 1983 single “Jeopardy.” This song was second only to Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” on the Billboard singles chart.
Originally popular on MTV, the song later became the target of a heartfelt spoof by Weird Al Yankovic titled “I Was Robbed on Jeopardy.” (Kihn gave Yankovic permission to remake it and even appeared in the music video.)
Born in Baltimore, Kihn relocated to the Bay Area during the 1970s. He crafted a unique sound by blending folk, classic rock, blues, and catchy pop tunes, eventually signing with local indie label Beserkley Records to debut his first album in 1976. One of Kihn’s songs, “The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write ‘Em),” reached the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number 15 in May 1981. Throughout his career, he released numerous albums with humorous titles such as “Next of Kihn,” “Citizen Kihn,” and most recently in 2017, “Rekihndled.”
As a dedicated cinephile speaking here, I’d like to share some intriguing aspects of the remarkable figure, Kihn. For 17 years, he graced the Bay Area airwaves during drive time, holding court as the morning host on KUFX-FM (KFOX) in San Jose. In 2018, he bid farewell to his radio family, retiring from the station.
Kihn is mourned by his spouse, Jay; his kids, Ryan and Alexis; his daughter’s husband, Samora; grandkids, Nate and Zuri; his sister, Laura; his brother-in-law, Lou; as well as nephews Larry, Lou, and Matthew.
