Greg James leaves Radio 1 fans baffled with bizarre statement about quitting the Breakfast Show due to BBC being ‘under corporate control’

On Sunday, Radio 1 host Greg James puzzled his listeners with an unusual message about stepping down from the Breakfast Show.

The radio host, aged 39, who’s been leading the primary morning program since 2018, vented on Instagram about feeling that the BBC is too heavily influenced by corporate entities.

Audience members were taken aback when they read the extensive announcement, only later discovering it was a jest, prior to Greg making his comeback on the radio on Monday.

Originally, he shared pictures of his holiday celebration, then admitted a jest in a video featuring his wife Bella Mackie (age 41), apologizing for the joke. The humor was aimed at Neil Young’s decision to cancel his Glastonbury performance.

‘We on the R1 Breakfast show team are excited to kick off another year and continue providing you with amusing content to help you wake up, which I personally love doing.’

‘Previously, we had been informed that the BBC was joining us as a partner but suggested tasks we weren’t keen on. It appears Radio 1 has now shifted under corporate management, which is not what I recall from the past. Thank you for tuning in over the last few years!’

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we regret that we won’t be able to proceed with our projects involving global celebrities, or honor our extraordinary audience members like Owen who accidentally cracked 10,000 eggs, and Alice who traveled to Paris hoping to meet some Olympians over the summer. This change also implies that we will discontinue our duck funeral services.

I no longer find Radio 1 appealing as it once was, more like a corporate station now. Instead, I hope we can connect on one of my podcasts.

He subsequently explained: ‘A mistake in the details I received led me to skip the breakfast show, a program I’ve always enjoyed. Fortunately, the radio show is now included in my schedule again, and we’re excited to join you for some morning fun! Looking forward to seeing you there!’ He concluded with this.

Anticipating the response from the management regarding a humorous remark about Neil Young and Glastonbury. It appears I may have accidentally caused a hiccup on my first day back, but it did bring a smile to my face, which is always a plus.

Audience members didn’t grasp the joke and immediately responded with comments like: “Here’s a guide on how to puzzle everyone” or “This was far too mysterious for a Sunday night.” Alternatively, they could have said, “This left me utterly bewildered!” or “I thought it was supposed to be funny but it wasn’t.” Additionally, some might have expressed their feelings by saying, “This was unsettling and confusing” or “I feel perplexed and a bit alarmed”.

After musician Neil changed his mind about performing at the Glastonbury Festival, he explained that a mistake in the information he originally received was responsible for his initial refusal. He had previously turned it down because he believed it was under the corporate management of the BBC.

79-year-old musician and his fresh live group, The Chrome Hearts, were speculated to be among the possible participants for a significant music festival happening at Worthy Farm in Somerset.

However, on New Year’s Day, Young made an explosive declaration, alleging that the festival is actually run by the BBC. This statement seems to have shattered the optimism among fans.

Due to incorrect info I received, I decided not to perform at the Glastonbury Festival, a place I’ve always admired.

It’s great news! The festival has been added to our schedule again, and we can hardly wait to perform. We hope you’ll join us!

Earlier this week, Young expressed in a public letter on the Neil Young Archives that he and Chrome Hearts were eagerly anticipating performing at Glastonbury, which has always been one of his favorite open-air concerts.

The information given indicates that the BBC has become a collaborator at Glastonbury, suggesting various approaches we weren’t keen on. This makes it appear as if Glastonbury, once familiar to me, is now influenced by corporate interests.

On this tour, we won’t be performing at Glastonbury as it seems too corporate for us now, unlike before. We look forward to meeting you at one of the other stops on our tour instead.

For quite some time now, the BBC has broadcasted performances from different music festivals on multiple TV and radio channels.

2009’s breathtaking Glastonbury show by Neil Young was aired on BBC, yet unfortunately, the full performance wasn’t shown as his team raised some objections. As an ardent fan, I was left yearning for more!

In response to complaints from his supporters, the BBC stated that they have been discussing with his management over the past few months regarding the amount of his performance they could air on television.

‘Neil Young’s career has been conducted on his own terms,’ the broadcaster said at the time.

‘The team managing Neil gave permission for his five songs to be aired on television and radio during his performance. They value the authenticity and enigma of live events and their artist.’

At the 1997 festival, the performer was scheduled to make an appearance, but ended up canceling due to an accident while preparing a ham sandwich that resulted in a cut on his finger.

In their latest group, Young has incorporated Micah Nelson on the electric guitar, Spooner Oldham handling the organ duties, Corey McCormick playing the bass, and Anthony LoGerfo manning the drum kit.

Announcing the comeback of Neil Young on the Pyramid Stage, Emily Eavis, the organizer of Glastonbury Festival, suggested there had been intense discussions leading up to this announcement, as she expressed: “What a fantastic beginning to the year! Neil Young is an artist we hold dear at Glastonbury.

‘He does things his own way and that’s why we love him..

We can’t wait to welcome him back here to headline the Pyramid in June.’
