Greg James completed the first day of his 1000km charity bike ride with a friend. He shared that he prepped for the challenge by watching the show Heated Rivalry and listening to Harry Styles’ latest song, Aperture.
According to The Sun, the Radio 1 Breakfast Show host, age 40, is cycling across the country alone to raise money for Comic Relief and says watching the TV show helps him deal with the physical discomfort.
He shared that he’s been intensely training on his bike since around Christmas, essentially doing leg workouts every single day. He admitted it’s been incredibly difficult, but he feels it’s worth the effort because he’s doing it for a good cause.
I’ve logged countless miles, both traveling the country and training indoors on my bike while watching cycling races on my laptop.
I’m currently obsessed with Harry Styles’ song, Aperture. I’ve also been enjoying a lot of The Chemical Brothers – their music is just really positive, energetic, and great for dancing.
Greg took off from Weymouth in Dorset and will cycle all the way to Edinburgh.
Vernon Kay, Sara Cox, Jo Whiley, and Scott Mills have been sending their support, and Jamie Laing and Mollie King have been sharing advice based on their own experiences.
This difficulty arises just a week after his father had a stroke and is currently in very poor health.
Greg had to cancel his performance last Friday because his father experienced a stroke while undergoing a scheduled heart procedure, and he wanted to be with his family.
He went back to work on Monday and shared that his father, known as ‘Big Al,’ is doing well and is still alive.
I just wanted to share a quick update and express my gratitude to Sam and Danni for being so understanding on Friday. Unfortunately, I had a bit of a family emergency – my dad hasn’t been feeling well lately, and it caused a slight disruption to things. I really appreciate their support!
‘I know that he would want me to get back on the show. And he’s still with us, which is good!’
Greg shared that his father is working hard to get better and is making slow but steady progress in his recovery.
Greg recently discussed a difficult situation on his show, explaining, ‘I want to share an update about the last few days, and it’s a bit more serious than what I usually cover.’
‘I’ve had a terrible time. My dad’s not very well. Not very well at all. And it’s horrible.
You may have heard Sam and Danni mention this on Friday’s Breakfast Show – I wasn’t able to be there myself. They were really kind about it, and I’m grateful to those of you who sent messages – I really appreciate the support!
He said: ‘In times like these, it’s so nice to feel the love from people.’
Greg said he’s sorry people are learning about his father’s situation through his social media, and apologized for the way they were finding out.
He had heart surgery on Thursday, and I intentionally took on the Breakfast Show that same day as a way to keep my mind off things.
Honestly, I just keep telling everyone how amazing radio is – it’s the perfect escape when life feels like it’s falling apart, you know? It’s not just good for us listeners, though; I truly believe the people making the radio feel it too. So, Thursday felt incredible. I just thought, ‘This is it, this is exactly where I need to be.’ I genuinely love doing it, it’s my happy place.
We received some very sad news on Thursday night: the surgery wasn’t successful, and he had a stroke. It’s just awful.
Greg said he went to visit his father in the ICU over the weekend.
He expressed his gratitude to the National Health Service for caring for his father, and specifically mentioned the doctor attending to him, noting their good looks.
Honestly, it sounds crazy even saying it out loud, but one of the best things for me right now is this WhatsApp group dedicated to… well, how incredibly attractive the doctor is! It’s totally silly, but it genuinely helps. It’s just… a little bit of lightheartedness when things are tough, and it’s surprisingly effective. I can’t believe I’m admitting this, but it’s true!
He joked: ‘Hope he doesn’t see this, because then it’s gonna be awkward when I next go in.’
Greg mentioned that he was continuing with his Red Nose Day challenge, even with everything happening around him.
