Green Lantern’s Epic Comeback: How DC’s Superman Trailer Redeems Hal Jordan!

The portrayal of Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan in 2011 didn’t live up to expectations, making it one of the most critiqued DC films ever. Despite being a fan favorite Green Lantern, the movie failed to impress. However, the latest Superman movie trailer hints at a promising new direction for the DC Universe.

As a die-hard film fan, I can’t help but notice the witty jabs Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool series takes at the expense of the DC films, particularly the Green Lantern. The disastrous reception of the Green Lantern film was so profound that it led to the DC Extended Universe steering clear of Earth-based Green Lanterns. However, I’m thrilled about James Gunn’s revitalization of the DC Universe, as it’s correcting that oversight by introducing several beloved Green Lantern characters. I have high hopes that David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman and another upcoming DC project will pave the way for a compelling live-action redemption arc for Hal Jordan.

The Superman Trailer’s Use Of Green Lantern’s Powers Is Exactly What I Hoped To See

Multiple Green Lanterns Are Already Confirmed For The DCU

It’s been confirmed that Hal Jordan won’t be featured in Gunn’s Superman film, but Nathan Fillion, who has portrayed him extensively in animation, will. The actor brings to life another Green Lantern, the impulsive Guy Gardner, within the Superman universe. Previews have given us glimpses of his heroics using his powers in the DCU. Interestingly, a scene shows Guy barely moving his wrist and unleashing a massive hand towards enemies instead of the usual green light burst.

In a delightful twist, Guy Gardner effortlessly unleashed a formidable assault, a testament to the fact that the DC Universe will soon portray Green Lantern’s powers not just as creatively dynamic in live-action, but also with the raw power they are known for. As the trailer winds down, our focus shifts from Guy to Superman and Lois Lane within their apartment, yet the Green Lantern is seen single-handedly restraining a colossal sun-like creature. The DC Universe’s Green Lanterns are proving to be as potent as I had envisioned.

Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan Was Lackluster In Multiple Ways

The Actor Had Better Luck As A Superhero With Marvel Than DC

As a fan of Ryan Reynolds, I had high expectations for his portrayal of Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern movie. However, I feel that he didn’t quite capture the serious, comic book-accurate version of the iconic Green Lantern character. Although the film aimed to give the character a more serious tone compared to Reynolds’ previous roles, his performance as Hal Jordan was too comedic for my interpretation of the hero.

Indeed, I believe Ryan Reynolds would have excelled as Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s interpretation of Superman, given his outstanding portrayal of Deadpool as Deadpool. Reflecting on Reynolds’ Green Lantern character, while I appreciated the scene where he built a racing cart and track with his Green Lantern constructs, I felt that the film fell short in adequately showcasing the vast potential of Green Lantern’s powers. However, considering Guy’s ability to summon immense energy effortlessly and creatively, I am confident that the DCU can rectify that shortcoming.

Lanterns Can All-Around Fix Hal Jordan & I Couldn’t Be More Excited

The DCU Already Has Plans For The Most Famous Green Lantern

In the upcoming HBO series “Lanterns,” Kyle Chandler, known for his role in “Friday Night Lights,” will portray Hal Jordan. This series serves as a precursor to the DCU’s Justice League, appearing under the name “Superman’s Justice Gang.” Meanwhile, Aaron Pierre from “Rebel Ridge” takes on the role of John Stewart, who is being mentored by veteran Hal Jordan. The storyline promises intrigue, with the duo delving into a mystery set on Earth and carrying a dark, brooding tone reminiscent of “True Detective.

The description really gets me pumped up, as it indicates that we’ll see a more serious portrayal of Hal Jordan, which aligns with the character’s essence, contrasting with Ryan Reynolds’ interpretation in Green Lantern. Since Earth serves as the setting, we’ve already caught glimpses of characters soaring through the air, and given the lineup that includes Sinestro and Guy Gardner, I suspect the Green Lantern’s powers will play a significant role in the series. Consequently, DC could learn from Superman and create Hal’s abilities to be thrilling in live-action.
