Great British Bake Off delivers “evil” technical challenge twist as first contestant exits

The Great British Bake Off spoilers follow.

In the opening episode of 2025’s season on Channel 4, The Great British Baking Show said goodbye to its initial contestant following a challenging technical round that some viewers considered particularly difficult.

During tonight’s premiere of the show, the 30-year-old scientist from South Yorkshire named Hassan was the first contestant to be eliminated. He faced difficulties in the initial challenge, finished sixth in the Technical round, and did not meet the expectations of judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood with his Showstopper creation.

During Cake Week, Nataliia excelled and won the title of Star Baker, impressing the judges greatly with her Showstopper cake, which paid homage to her native country, Ukraine.

2025 saw the start of a new season for the extended television show, featuring Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding once again taking their hosting roles, while Prue and Paul resumed their positions as judges.

In the initial competition, the bakers were tasked with creating a Swiss roll featuring two distinct fillings. Prue emphasized the importance of achieving an ideal spiral pattern, while Paul requested a vibrant and flavorful final product.

But it was the Technical challenge that had fans talking.

In an innovative spin on the usual technical task, the show presented contestants with a puzzle: They were asked to bake nine elegant fondant fancies without any prior recipe or ingredient list. To add to the challenge, they only received one sample fondant fancy as guidance. Their mission was to decipher the ingredients required and learn how best to utilize them in order to recreate the dessert.

In the realm of taste, not every competitor could pull off nine flawless pastries for the challenge. However, I managed to come out on top after a less-than-stellar debut, earning the first spot. Unfortunately, Tom struggled and ended up in last place.

On social media, one spectator labeled the unexpected turn as “wicked,” whereas several competitors referred to the task as “extremely tough.

The Great British Bake Off airs on Tuesdays on Channel 4.
