Great Britain’s rowers take a historic gold medal at Varies-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium
As a fervent supporter who has witnessed countless moments of triumph and heartbreak, I can confidently say that the women’s quadruple sculls race on July 31, 2024 was one for the history books! The nail-biting photo finish between Team Great Britain and the Netherlands, with a mere 0.15 seconds separating them, was nothing short of exhilarating.
In the final leg of the competition, it couldn’t have been more fitting for Team Great Britain to win the gold medal in the women’s quadruple sculls on July 31st, as the outcome was decided by a mere 0.15 seconds separating them from the silver medal team. This closely contested race is an apt illustration of the saying that victories are often determined in the final moments.
The impossible dream?
Leading slightly before the Dutch team were the quartet: Lauren Henry, Hannah Scott, Lola Anderson, and Georgie Brayshaw.

As per the athlete bios available on TeamGB.com, Henry, aged 22, clinched the British Rowing Senior Team Trials in 2023. Notably, he also secured the European and World Championships in the quadruple scull event.
Born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, Scott is a former Olympic rower who represented her country at the Tokyo 2020 games. After her participation, she was involved in Project Minerva – a study focusing on female athletes’ performance. This project aimed to address and treat the osteopenia, a low bone density condition, that Scott had been diagnosed with.
Brayshaw took up rowing following an accident where she fell off a horse, which left her partially paralyzed for a year. At 30 years old, she’s just set a new world record for rowing 5 kilometers on the RP3 machine. This isn’t her first major achievement; she’s previously won medals at both World and European championships in quadruple scull events.
Finally, Olympic dreams are often a long time in coming and Lola Anderson’s story stands out:
Gold also marked the end of an emotional chapter for Anderson who, after London 2012, wrote in her diary that she wanted to be Olympic champion before ripping the note out because she thought it was unachievable.
Later on, Anderson received the small piece of paper from her father, just prior to his passing. In quotes, she mentioned, “I can feel how incredibly proud he would be. He’s very much on my mind at the moment. This is quite touching.”
Historical marks
With this victory, the quadruple scull team reached several significant achievements – it was their first-ever gold medal win for Team GB in that particular event. Scott expressed his feelings, saying, “It’s something we’ve worked towards for a long time, and I’m still finding it hard to grasp…I’ve just been trying to keep my emotions in check.”
Winning this contest, Team GB secured their 300th medal in women’s events across both the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games.
