After over three decades with KABC-TV Channel 7, longtime Los Angeles news anchor Leslie Sykes said goodbye to viewers on Tuesday as she retired from “Eyewitness News.”
With her colleagues standing by her side, the morning news show’s co-anchor shared how hard it was to believe this was her last day. She expressed how much it meant to her to start people’s days with the news, to share their stories, and to be a part of their mornings. She said she’ll always cherish the memories and is deeply grateful for the viewers’ trust.
As I’m saying goodbye, please know I’ll always be a huge fan of this city and everyone here at the station. It truly means the world to me that I got to be a part of your daily lives. It was so special to see the St. Joseph High School marching band – my alma mater! – come out and perform, too. What a wonderful send-off!

Ellen Leyva, a news anchor at KABC, recently shared that her biggest worry when she started was whether she’d be successful enough to keep her job on television.
Born in San Diego and raised in Compton, Lynette Sykes began her broadcasting career with a job in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She later returned to her roots, joining KABC in Los Angeles in 1994 as a reporter. Over time, she became a weekend, daytime, and ultimately, morning news anchor. Last month, Sykes announced her retirement.
ABC7 honored Sykes with a special tribute that featured a farewell message from David Muir and an interview with his colleague and friend, Jovana Lara.

The host of the political talk show ‘The Issue Is’ has been with the outlet since 2017.
Lara described Sykes as initially a little nervous, but quickly becoming fearless, especially when her stories had a significant impact. The reel, featuring highlights from Sykes’ life and career, also praised her as one of the best in local and international reporting.
Sykes said she was overwhelmed with gratitude when she learned how much the community cared for her.
Honestly, being there just felt amazing. I really connected with the energy and the crowd, and it honestly felt like coming home. I was just so thankful to be surrounded by people who *got* it, you know?
