Viewers of the show Grantchester were excited to see photos of James Norton, the original lead actor, on set earlier this year, leading many to think he might return for the show’s last season.
James Norton played Reverend Sidney Chambers alongside Robson Green‘s Detective Inspector Geordie Keating in the ITV drama. He appeared in the first four seasons before leaving the show in 2019.
Recent rumors about his return were put to rest by the cast of Grantchester during a recent press conference. According to RadioTimes.com, Green explained that their meeting wasn’t planned and was simply a coincidence.

“It was crazy,” Green remembered. “I was sitting with Kacey [Ainsworth] at dinner, and we were just catching up and, like everyone else, mostly talking about ourselves.”
A really tall, magnetic guy walked in and sat in the corner, reading. I couldn’t believe it, I thought, ‘Is that James Norton?’ And it was! He looked up, said ‘What the—?!’ and we both reacted the same way. Then we just started sharing old memories.

The actor shared that both Norton and Tom Brittney, who previously played Reverend Will Davenport, joined the cast and crew at the show’s wrap party.
It was a truly beautiful night. ‘The stars really aligned,’ Green said. ‘There was so much to celebrate, and Emma Kingsman-Lloyd, our executive producer, gave a wonderful speech reflecting on what an incredible experience it’s been for everyone involved.’

Actress Ainsworth, who portrays Geordie’s wife Cathy, called the moment “an amazing stroke of luck.” She explained that Norton mentioned he hadn’t visited that particular restaurant in two or three years.
He’d quickly stopped by for a snack before heading to the theatre. We’ll always remember it as a magical moment, and we believe the wonderful atmosphere of Grantchester was the reason. It has a way of creating that kind of magic.
Grantchester airs in the UK on ITV1 and streams on ITVX
