Grant Gustin’s Epic One-Word Answer Sparks DCU Flash Comeback Frenzy

For 11 years on television, the Arrowverse series introduced numerous DC superheroes to viewers through various shows. Many of the franchise’s main actors may continue to be associated with their roles for some time to come. Actor Grant Gustin is familiar with this situation, and it seems that fans are constantly requesting his return to the role for James Gunn, despite his apparent willingness to move on from the television character. However, now he sounds less reluctant.

At Fan Expo Denver, Gustin and some of his previous Flash co-stars took part in a reunion panel. During this event, a young fan asked an intriguing question about who Gustin would choose to play a superhero in one of the DCU’s upcoming movies if given the opportunity by director James Gunn. Without hesitation, Gustin swiftly responded with a succinct answer:

Flash.

Interestingly, Gustin seemed a bit embarrassed while responding, likely because he knew that was the response the audience wanted most and didn’t want to go against their expectations, especially given that the questioner was quite young. It seems simpler to provide a less enthusiastic answer when an adult is holding the microphone, I would assume.

Ignoring practical considerations for a moment, the enthusiastic applause from the crowd could be seen as a representation of how the broader superhero community might respond if James Gunn unexpectedly announced that Grant Gustin would appear in the DC Universe as a speedster. While it’s true that Gustin has previously expressed interest in playing the DCU’s Flash should James Gunn offer him the role, I assumed he would prefer to tackle a new character rather than revisit Barry Allen to avoid retracing old steps.

As a cinephile, I can’t help but reminisce about the idea of Grant Gustin reprising his role as Barry Allen in Ezra Miller’s Flash movie. Alas, it seems that fate had other plans amidst the complex web of multiversal connections. However, it would have added a delightful touch to the narrative, especially considering the rich history between these two interpretations of the character. That being said, I don’t believe it was essential for James Gunn to bring back Gustin as Barry Allen in his vision.

When The Flash enters the DC Universe, it’s typically Wally West who takes on the role as his alter ego. This means that Grant Gustin might be too old or not ethnically suitable for that part, depending on the creative decisions made. However, there’s a chance he could portray Jay Garrick, the Golden Age superhero, for a limited time, or even make a cameo as a character from The Flash’s rogues gallery. There are many options to consider in this scenario.

The Flash’s Tom Cavanagh Knows Fans Want Grant Gustin In The DCU, But He Has A Better Idea

It’s unlikely that Gustin or The Flash will make appearances in future DC TV series such as Peacemaker Season 2 and Lanterns, but let’s keep rooting for him to land the Scarlet Speedster role in a movie down the line. The DC Universe officially begins when James Gunn’s Superman premieres in cinemas on July 11, 2025.
