Grant Denyer reveals his lowest point during harrowing opioid addiction battle: ‘I’m still so ashamed’

Grant Denyer has opened up about his rock bottom moment amid his harrowing addiction battle.

The popular game show host, who is currently 47 years old, has faced a well-known struggle with painkiller dependency in the past. This challenge came after he sustained injuries to his spine in a surprising incident involving a monster truck crash back in 2008.

The accident resulted in Grant’s spine being fractured into eleven fragments, causing doctors to worry that he may be permanently confined to a wheelchair.

On the Jase & Lauren show on Nova 100 on a Friday morning, Grant openly discussed the point in his struggle with addiction where he hit rock bottom.

As a conscientious follower, I often recall one image that serves as a constant reminder for me, as it’s essential to keep track of my own actions, isn’t it?

‘In the addiction for some reason that night, I wanted scotch,’ he continued.

‘One evening, I found myself roaming the city center in nothing but my underwear. I had left my apartment suddenly, disoriented and in search of liquor, and ended up getting lost along the way.’

It was mentioned that Grant’s spouse of 14 years, Chezzi, searched for him diligently for three hours, eventually locating him on a fire escape, where he was napping near a heap of waste.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: “In a rather embarrassing turn of events, I found myself in quite a predicament – I was so disoriented that I could barely walk, as if my back had just snapped. To make matters worse, I got lost within the building, and three hours later, I was discovered slumbering on a fire escape, huddled up against a wall, feeling stuck, lost, and rather unfortunate to be in such close proximity to someone else’s unwanted deposit.

It seems someone had left waste in the fire escape, and there I was, sound asleep on the ground, bare-bottomed and disoriented.

‘I just try and remember that if I ever think I’m slipping.’

In a subsequent part of their open conversation, the ex-Sunrise presenter also confessed that he continues to experience embarrassment about how his addiction impacted Chezzi.

He confessed he continues to feel deeply sorry and humiliated over the hurtful words and actions towards his wife during his struggle with addiction.

‘It was humiliating and destructive.’

Grant expressed that following his unexpected accident, he never imagined that his pain relievers would plunge him into a ‘nightmare’.

He explained that his broken back’s healing process was difficult for him, and he developed a dependence on the prescribed painkillers.

‘There are certain aspects of medical treatment that people often don’t warn you about. For instance, if you visit a hospital due to an injury, they will treat it and prescribe medications, but nobody usually sits you down to explain potential long-term consequences, which might resemble a slippery slope towards more problems.’

2023 saw him openly discussing his struggle with addiction on the Jess Rowe Big Talk Show podcast. He confessed to experiencing intense, disturbing visions where it seemed intruders were violating his home and wife.

Grant mentioned that when someone’s under such strong medication effects and experiencing intense pain, they often dive straight into their most terrifying dreams as soon as they fall asleep, and this happens night after night.

‘When you wake up you can’t differentiate what was real and what wasn’t.’
