Granny gone wild! High profile Aussie transforms into ‘nursing home’ golden girl for festive spot of lawn bowls – so do you know who it is?
As I delve deeper into this heartwarming tale of resilience and determination, I find myself utterly captivated by Grace Tame’s indomitable spirit. Her journey, marked by trials and tribulations, is a testament to the strength of the human will.
On Tuesday, Grace Tame caused quite a stir among her followers as she donned a grandmother-like outfit to stylishly celebrate a friend’s birthday.
Tame donned a grey wig and an old fashioned floral dress along with pearls and a pair of specs.
The friends went on to pose for a hilarious lawn bowls themed shoot in their old lady fancy dress.
Previously honored as Australia’s citizen of the year, she additionally posted videos of herself performing a lively limbo dance over a cane on the lawn bowling field at the Sandy Bay Bowls and Community Club in Tasmania during the festive season.
Tame captioned the post, ‘Grannies Gold Wild’, adding an ambulance and champagne emoji.
On Saturday afternoon, the nursing home staff graciously allowed us an escape for a few hours so we could celebrate Emelia’s 80th birthday, who is very dear to us.
Cheers to our strong bond that never breaks, and to countless more years of joint adventures until our legs tire! Shout-out to Sandy Bay Bowlo for their gracious hospitality!
It didn’t take much time for Grace’s geriatric-themed costume and lively limbo performance to attract numerous comments.
‘Don’t break a hip,’ wrote one friend, top which Tame replied: ‘Too late, the limbo got me’.
‘Love it!!! You could have borrowed my walking frame Granny Grace!’ wrote another.
‘HAHAHAH! Love you,’ added a third, before a fourth wrote, ‘Suits you’
After Tame admitted her aspiration to attend the Olympics, it was disclosed that she’s currently logging an impressive 100 kilometers weekly in her training regimen.
To stand a chance at qualifying for the games, the Australian long-distance runner mentioned that she’d likely need to adjust her training schedule since Los Angeles will be hosting the Olympics in 2028, followed by Brisbane in 2032.
In May, Tame, a champion for those who have experienced sexual assault, powered through the route of the Great Ocean Road Running Festival, ultimately being the first woman to cross the finish line in the challenging 60km ultra-marathon.
She blitzed the course in just under four hours and 43 minutes.
2021’s Australian of the Year couldn’t contain her delight as she broke down in tears after the competition, despite facing powerful winds and rain during the event.
Previously, Tame managed to run a marathon in less than two hours, and when asked by ABC News Australia if she might attempt to qualify for the Olympics during a podcast, the 29-year-old expressed a willingness to consider it.
In response to being asked about her thoughts after observing the marathon at the Paris Games, Tame expressed enthusiasm by saying, “I really want to attend the Olympics.
‘I’m not going to ever put a limit on myself.
To improve, I need to focus on increasing my speed and maintaining my performance consistently. Additionally, I might need to rearrange some tasks in my work schedule as managing the workload effectively is crucial.
On an average day, I carry a significant mental burden which impedes my performance as a runner. To fully tap into my running potential, I must lessen this cognitive load.
In the podcast discussion, Tame shared insights into her experience with running, expressing her affection for the activity, and explaining why she thinks it’s an excellent method for individuals to unwind and find tranquility.
Tame shared that she started jogging during her school days and her athletic cousin, Elouise, ignited her passion for the sport of triathlon.
When inquired about attempting to qualify for the Olympics, Tame remained open to the possibility.
She jokingly implied, “If it isn’t obvious, I’m up for trying just about anything.
‘I’d have to shave a bit of time off my marathon time,’ she added.
It’s clear that my weekly running distance is significantly less than what Olympic athletes typically log. On average, they run up to 200 kilometers per week, which is nearly double my current mileage.
‘I’d have to adjust my plates [schedule],’ she said.
15-year-old Tame suffered sexual abuse at the hands of her 58-year-old teacher, Nicolaas Bester, while she was a Year 10 student at St Michael’s Collegiate Girls’ School in Hobart. He had groomed and abused her.
Bester was subsequently convicted and jailed.
In my commitment to making the world a safer place, especially for our most vulnerable members – children, I’ve found myself delving deeper into activism. I’ve dedicated my efforts towards enlightening people about the pressing issue of child sexual abuse and have been an advocate for necessary legal changes that can protect our kids from such harm.
The distance runner also founded the Grace Tame Foundation.
The organisation looks to support schemes aimed at stopping child sexual abuse and help survivors.
In the podcast, the Australian woman shared insights about the significance of running in her life and her experiences thus far in the sport.
‘I am nowhere near an elite-level runner,’ she said.
‘I’ve really got into running and realised that I enjoyed doing it when I was young and was in primary school.
‘My cousin Elouise, who now coaches me, was doing triathlons and she stayed at our house a lot.
She mentioned that we are approximately four years apart, and I believe I was roughly six or seven years of age when she went for a run one morning. This is when I inquired if I could join her on her run.
Over the last quarter-century following that initial significant run, we’ve traveled far beyond just a few hundred kilometers – more accurately, several thousand kilometers. To this day, I have never turned back.
When discussing her connection to running, she noted that it mirrors her personal relationship and sense of balance: “My running journey is a lot like me – it shows how I navigate through life’s ups and downs.
My path has been quite challenging, with extended breaks due to traumatic experiences or physical injuries along the way.
‘On the whole, it is such an integral part of being a human being.’
