Graham McTavish Unleashes Survival Terror in ‘Gunn’ by ‘Dog Soldiers’ Maestro Neil Marshall
Known for directing movies like “Dog Soldiers,” “Hellboy,” and episodes of the HBO fantasy series “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon,” as well as “Outlander,” Neil Marshall, has announced his next project along with its main actor. As reported by Variety, this British director is set to direct a new high-concept survival thriller called “Gunn.” The movie will blend action and horror elements on a remote offshore platform setting. Actor Graham McTavish, known for his roles in “House of the Dragon” and “Outlander,” has been cast for this upcoming film, but the specifics of his role are currently unclear.
At present, not much information is available about ‘Gunn’. What we do know is that it features a screenplay penned by Doug Rao, who is gearing up for his first directorial venture in a feature film – the 2024 psychological thriller “Dirty Boy”, which also stars McTavish in a prominent role. The script for ‘Gunn’ has already garnered acclaim, having won the Gold Prize in the thriller/horror category at the esteemed PAGE Screenwriting Awards in 2023. Its plot revolves around the brutal solitude of a North Sea oil rig seized by a pagan cult.
At present, preparations are being made for the release of “Gunn” in anticipation of the Cannes Film Market. Negotiations regarding sales are ongoing prior to filming later this year. The production is scheduled to occur in both the United Kingdom and Bulgaria. Rao, along with Mark Myers and John Hermann, will be producing the survival thriller. Marshall plans to bring the acclaimed script to life visually, potentially incorporating elements reminiscent of his earlier works such as “Dog Soldiers” and “The Descent”.
‘Dog Soldiers 2’ Is Not Likely to Happen
Marshall’s guidance towards Gunn implies that Dog Soldiers 2 may be put on hold, or even abandoned entirely. A sequel to the 2002 werewolf thriller has been in development for quite some time, but after six years of attempting to secure a deal to bring the movie to theaters, Marshall recently disclosed some disappointing news about its progress. However, he did offer a glimmer of hope, as he mentioned that he is now working on another action-horror project involving werewolves instead.
As a cinephile, I must say that “Dog Soldiers” left quite an impression on me. Critics widely appreciated this film for its innovative take on the horror genre, where a military unit’s routine training in the Scottish Highlands takes a terrifying turn when they encounter a band of werewolves. The movie was initially conceived as a trilogy, but unfortunately, the sequel never fully materialized due to creative challenges faced by Marshall. Now, it seems he has shifted his focus to leading another set of cinematic endeavors.
