GoPro just released three new products: a significantly improved 360-degree camera, a small, lifestyle-oriented action camera, and a smart gimbal. This gimbal works with any action camera – a major upgrade from their 2016 model which only worked with GoPros.
Interestingly, what GoPro *isn’t* doing this year is noteworthy. For the first time in over ten years, they won’t be releasing a new top-of-the-line action camera. Instead, they’re focusing on their existing lineup and continuing to support last year’s popular HERO13 Black.
The brand new GoPro MAX2 is the latest offering from GoPro, building on their original GoPro MAX from 2019. While it shares a name with the previous model, the MAX2 is a significant upgrade. Unlike the original, which GoPro advertised as a versatile 3-in-1 device, the MAX2 is a focused 360-degree camera that competes with the top performers in the market.
GoPro calls the MAX2 the “world’s best and most durable 360 camera.” It captures video in true 8K resolution, meaning it delivers a full 8K image with usable pixels – something GoPro says other consumer 360 cameras, like the Insta360 X5 and DJI Osmo 360, don’t quite achieve. While those competitors are also marketed as 8K, they include pixels that are lost during the process of creating a seamless 360-degree image. GoPro claims the MAX2 offers 16% better resolution than the Insta360 X5 and 23% better resolution than the DJI Osmo 360.
The MAX2 doesn’t just shoot in high resolution; it also offers 10-bit color, GP Log encoding, and six built-in microphones for immersive 360° audio. This gives both professional filmmakers and serious enthusiasts greater creative control over their videos. Plus, its lenses are easily replaceable with a quick twist-and-go mechanism – a smart feature considering GoPro cameras are often used during action sports where accidents can happen, preventing the entire camera from being ruined.
Okay, so the MAX2 isn’t just about video. I was really impressed with the still photos – you can snap 29-megapixel 360 pics, which is seriously high resolution. That means I can crop and zoom in without losing a ton of quality. Plus, they’ve added some cool AI features. There’s this ‘AI Object Tracking’ that keeps whatever I’m filming in the shot, and ‘MotionFrame’ gives me different ways to capture action. The battery life is solid too – 1,960mAh and built to handle anything from freezing temps to scorching heat. And get this – GoPro says it’s the only 360 camera with built-in GPS, which is a game changer for tracking my adventures!
I’m really excited about the new GoPro LIT HERO! It’s this super small action camera GoPro is releasing, and it seems perfect for just capturing life as it happens. They’re calling it a “Whatever, Whenever” kind of camera, which I love – it’s meant to be always ready to go. It shoots amazing 4K video up to 60 frames per second, and you can even do slow motion! Of course, it’s totally waterproof, which is a must for me, and can go down to 16 feet. The best part? It’s incredibly lightweight at just 3.28 ounces and can record for up to 100 minutes on a single charge. It looks like a really fun, easy-to-use camera!
GoPro is releasing a new stabilizer, the Fluid Pro AI, which is a successor to their 2016 Karma Grip. Unlike the older model that only worked with GoPro cameras, this new gimbal is versatile and compatible with smartphones and other cameras weighing up to 0.88 pounds. This means creators can travel light without needing multiple stabilizers. The 3-axis gimbal includes changeable mounts, a built-in light, and can run for up to 18 hours on a single charge. It can even be used as a power bank to charge your devices!
You can now pre-order the GoPro MAX2 and LIT HERO cameras on GoPro’s website. The MAX2 costs £449.99 (or $499.99) and will ship on September 30th. The LIT HERO is priced at £239.99 (or $269.99) and will start shipping October 21st. The GoPro Fluid Pro AI gimbal will also be available starting October 21st for $229.99.
