‘Goonies’ unite: Ke Huy Quan’s childhood co-stars turn out for his Hollywood handprint fest
For many “Goonies” enthusiasts, Ke Huy Quan’s hand and footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre on Monday brought back fond memories, much like revisiting a cherished data point.
On Monday, the Oscar-winning actor, famous for his role as gadget expert Richard “Data” Wang in “The Goonies,” left his footprints at the well-known “The Forecourt of the Stars.” This iconic site, known for immortalizing Hollywood legends, now includes Quan among its esteemed ranks. For Quan, this ceremony represented the realization of a longstanding, seemingly impossible dream.
Dreams are peculiar, aren’t they? They seem to grow silently and thrive on optimism, even when the world around us tries to tear them out. But sometimes, without warning, they blossom in ways we could never have imagined.
Television
According to Ke Huy Quan’s own words, landing the lead role as Ouroboros in Season 2 of ‘Loki’ marked the fulfillment of a long-held dream for him and served as the crowning achievement of an incredibly successful year.
As a movie enthusiast reflecting on an unforgettable event, I must say that the celebration for the esteemed actor behind “Love Hurts” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” was nothing short of a nostalgic journey. The evening was graced by several cherished guests, some of whom go way back to the early days of Quan’s illustrious acting career.
The stars of “The Goonies,” namely Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, Corey Feldman, and the brilliant screenwriter Chris Columbus, graced Hollywood to honor Quan on this significant milestone. Remarkably, this occasion coincided with the 40th anniversary of their timeless adventure classic from 1985. What a delight it was to witness such a gathering!
In a playful manner, during his speech on Monday as captured by Maximo TV, Brolin quipped to Quan, “It seems like something you’d think had ended in the ’40s, but here you are carrying it on.
Brolin went on to say: “Clearly, they returned it with someone exceptionally important in mind, and that’s you. You occupy a very valuable spot in my heart.
In his speech, “Dune” actor Brolin revealed a letter from renowned director Steven Spielberg, the co-writer of “The Goonies”, who was unable to attend due to being on holiday. Brolin quoted, “‘Hey buddy, as usual, I’m filled with pride for your extraordinary journey, first your rapid rise as a child star and then your second remarkable ascendancy as an adult,'” Brolin recited.
Awards
Ke Huy Quan clinched the Supporting Actor accolade for the very first time, thanks to his exceptional performance in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once.’
In the letter, it says: “Dearest Ke, know that your love is constant, so too is my admiration, and forevermore, you are a cherished member of both my professional and personal family.
In the movie “The Goonies,” a 13-year-old actor named Quan played Data, a clever character who assists his friends in finding a secret pirate treasure to save their community from being auctioned off. Before his recent return to Hollywood, Quan was recognized for his roles as Short Round in Steven Spielberg’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” and various parts in films like “Encino Man” and TV shows such as “Head of the Class” and “Nothing Is Easy.
During his professional journey, he endured multiple dry spells and then resurfaced on the silver screen approximately 20 years later with the movie “Finding ‘Ohana” and the directors Daniels’, who are Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheiner. However, it was the latter film, “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, that brought a transformative impact to Quan’s life.
2023 marked a significant milestone for Quan, as he claimed his first ever Oscar win. This achievement paved the way for numerous acting roles. He was cast in Disney+’s “American Born Chinese” and the Marvel series “Loki,” and is currently the main star in this month’s action comedy “Love Hurts.
Entertainment & Arts
Ke Huy Quan, an Oscar nominee, shared his return-to-spotlight journey and explained the unique transformation in his acting career following ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ on ‘The Late Show.’
In his talk, Quan reminisced about his ambition to establish his own Hollywood studios, inspired by Spielberg and George Lucas doing the same in 1984. He expressed that the day’s Chinese Theatre celebration was a profoundly surreal “coming back to where I started” moment, which he shared on Monday.
He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Daniels filmmaking duo, saying, “I am deeply appreciative for returning me.” During his speech, visibly emotional Quan thanked his family for teaching him the essence of persistence.
He stated, “This instance isn’t solely about making my impact there, but rather about paying tribute to those who have consistently supported me even when I wasn’t always able to support myself.
On Monday night, the movie titled ‘Love Hurts,’ featuring Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose, Daniel Wu, Sean Astin (famous for his role in ‘The Goonies’), and Marshawn Lynch, had its premiere at the Chinese Theatre. This film by director Jonathan Eusebio will be available in theaters starting this Friday.
