Goonies’ Reunion: Brolin, Quan, and Cohen Honor Dune 2 Work at LA Exhibition

On a Monday evening in Los Angeles, the original cast of “The Goonies” gathered to pay tribute to actor Josh Brolin, who played Brandon, at a Leica event showcasing his impressive career achievements.

The author of “Dune 2: Exposures,” which features behind-the-scenes photos by Greig Fraser and includes text penned by Josh (known for his role as Brandon in the ’80s hit), is none other than Josh himself.

In a delightful gathering, the actor was accompanied by his long-time co-stars Jeff Cohen, known for his role as Chunk, and Ke Huy Quan, famed for his character Data, to mark the release of a new book.

The text delves into the process behind Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, as portrayed by Josh’s writing and stunning visuals from cinematographer Greig.

Josh, Jeff, and Ke convened for a few group photos, with the author embracing his two companions tenderly, expressing camaraderie and affection.

In a casual and effortless manner, the actor from No Country for Old Men wore a worn-out, black and cream leather jacket, paired with a gray T-shirt and scarf, topping it off with a baseball cap.

During this event, Jeff and Ke chose to wear smart white shirts and jackets. To complete his look, the Chunk actor accessorized with a brown bowler hat.

At the gathering, Timothée Chalamet, the prominent actor from Dune, made an appearance, exuding a casual charm in a sleek black leather jacket and a cap turned backward.

Also in attendance was Dune director Denis Villeneuve and visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert.

This month, the cast has come together for the second time to express their solidarity, keeping in mind the lingering anticipation among fans of the 1985 cult favorite, that a sequel might still be on the horizon.

A week ago, Josh, Jeff, Corey Feldman (known as Mouth), Kerri Green (Andy), and Chris Columbus made an appearance together on the red carpet at the TLC Chinese Theater for a special celebration of Ke.

The unity among the cast members was palpable, as they enveloped Ke in affectionate hugs, while Jeff, now serving as his legal advisor in the entertainment industry, gave him a particularly heartfelt bear hug.

As a die-hard Goonies fan, I feel like I was right there beside Mikey himself, Sean Astin, when he shared the screen once more with Ke in the movie “Love Hurts”. It’s a testament to the enduring magic of the Goonies that their spirit continues to thrive in Tinseltown.

The event paid tribute to Ke, whose acting career took off at age 12 in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and more recently reached a pinnacle with his Academy Award victory for Best Supporting Actor in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

With the reunion stirring up even more memories of The Goonies, fans found themselves questioning if another exciting escapade was possible for the group.

Every so often, rumors about a sequel pop up, but they’re swiftly dismissed by the original cast members, with the latest denial occurring in September.

It was stated in a report that The Goonies 2 might be shot the following summer, with several of the original actors reprising their roles; however, these claims were refuted by the actors themselves.

It seems there’s no script for a Goonies sequel yet, and as far as we know, nobody has been officially linked to the project. Martha Plimpton mentioned this on her Instagram post.

It appears that, at this moment, the adventure of the Goonies searching for their treasure has become a memory from the past.

‘[Steven] Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real.’ she added.

As a die-hard admirer, I can tell you that, back then, I hadn’t a single scrap of knowledge suggesting a sequel was on the horizon, according to Corey Feldman.

Back in the not-so-distant past of 2014, I just couldn’t shake off the excitement when it seemed like the long-awaited sequel to my beloved film, The Goonies, was finally gaining some serious momentum! Variety had dropped a tantalizing tidbit that the original director, Donner himself, was making a valiant effort to bring back our cherished cast for an epic return in The Goonies 2. I could hardly contain my enthusiasm!

Back then, I was absolutely buzzing with excitement when Sean Astin confidently stated, “A Goonies 2 is definitely in the works!” He went on to express his unwavering belief, saying, “I’m as sure as can be that there will be a sequel. I’d put my kids’ college fund on it.

Unfortunately, the renowned producer Richard Donner passed away in 2021 at the ripe age of 91, taking with him the dream of a possible reunion.

As for Jeff, in 2015, he revealed how losing his puppy fat was the end of his acting career.

As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but share this intriguing tale. Once a cherished figure in the realm of child stardom, now an accomplished legal eagle in the entertainment industry, his journey took a dramatic turn when he was compelled to bid Hollywood adieu forever, as the roles that once fit him like a glove – those ‘plump kid’ characters – were no longer suitable for him.

As a die-hard fan, I’d often find myself in a situation where there were merely a handful of us who fit the ‘plus-sized’ mold in our small town. Consequently, whenever a casting call for a ‘big kid’ role came up, it was always the same familiar faces at the auditions.

In my youth, it seemed that being large and plump was a key to survival. However, as I reached maturity, this physique became a significant hindrance in my career. I was gradually transitioning from being overweight to athletic, yet the acting roles began to evade me.

Jeff went on to say, “It was dreadful. Initially, I loved acting, but puberty had different plans for me. It felt like a compulsory farewell. I didn’t quit acting; instead, acting let me go.

A popular movie called The Goonies revolves around a band of young adventurers discovering an ancient map that leads to the hidden wealth of the infamous pirate, One-Eyed Willy. Excited by this discovery, they set out on a thrilling journey to uncover the treasure, but are pursued by a group of nefarious individuals who aim to grab the fortune for themselves.

Produced by Spielberg, the film became an instant classic and remains a staple of 80s cinema.

In simpler terms, while The Goonies might live on forever, it appears that for the moment, the thrill of the treasure hunt remains confined to history.
