Good Omens season 3 will only be one 90-minute episode (in other words, a TV movie)

As a long-time fan of Good Omens, this news has left me feeling rather bewildered and saddened, much like Aziraphale and Crowley when they realized their beloved bookstore was going out of business. The idea of a truncated final season is certainly not what I had hoped for when the show first graced our screens, but it seems that life, much like the apocalypse, has its own unexpected twists and turns.

The popular fantasy series, “Good Omens,” is set to return for its third season, but it’s going to be quite different from the first two. According to TV Line, reliable sources have informed them that the production of the final season of Amazon Prime Video’s hit show is undergoing some changes. Instead of being a series of multiple episodes like the previous seasons, the third and concluding installment of “Good Omens” will only be a single 90-minute episode. Essentially, the show is wrapping up with a TV film.

It’s highly likely that the delay in production for the third season of “Good Omens” on Prime Video is due to the persistent sexual assault allegations against author Neil Gaiman. He collaborated on the original novel with Terry Pratchett, the cherished creator of “Discworld”, and was slated to be the sole showrunner for the series’ final season. In early September, work on “Good Omens” season 3 was temporarily halted due to these allegations, with Gaiman expressing his willingness to withdraw from the project if it would help move things forward.

The show is all set to resume with Michael Sheen and David Tennant reprising their roles as Aziraphale and Crowley respectively. However, according to TV Line’s report, Neil Gaiman’s role will be minimal; he contributed to the scriptwriting for the final 90-minute episode of the series but will not participate in the filming process when it comes to that.

Good Omens scrapping plans for a full third season is a shame, but probably for the best

In essence, this news appears to be a decision that probably won’t satisfy anyone involved – the team behind the series who aimed for a complete conclusion, the viewers seeking a more comprehensive experience, or those who desire Gaiman to face greater accountability for his actions. Yet, it could be argued that this compromise might be beneficial in some way. The Good Omens series, which holds great significance for its fans, will conclude albeit in a shortened manner, with Neil Gaiman not present on set, thus allowing the series to bid farewell.

To this day, five individuals, including a 23-year-old nanny and a woman who was only 18 when they first met at a book signing, have made accusations against Neil Gaiman. The nanny alleged that the author had assaulted her shortly after their initial encounter, while the other woman claimed that their relationship developed from that meeting, which resulted in sex that she found unpleasant and non-consensual. These allegations were initially shared on Tortoise Media’s podcast “Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman“. Although Gaiman has declared these incidents consensual through a statement given to Tortoise, he has not yet made any public statements regarding the accusations.

In December 2023, Neil Gaiman expressed his joy about completing the story he and co-author Terry Pratchett had discussed as a potential sequel to their novel “Good Omens” in 1989 and 2006. Gaiman stated, “I’m thrilled that I can now finish the tale Terry and I started plotting back then.” Pratchett was adamant that if they brought “Good Omens” to television, they could conclude the story properly. Season One revolved around averting Armageddon, perilous prophecies, and the impending end of the world. Season Two was more tranquil but may not have had the happy ending some characters like Crowley and Aziraphale might have wished for. In Season Three, we will delve into the end of the world again as the plans for Armageddon are going awry. Only by working together can Crowley and Aziraphale possibly rectify the situation. And they’re not exactly on speaking terms.”>

We’ll find out how everything turns out when “Good Omens” season 3 airs its 90-minute final episode. Filming is set to begin in early 2025, so we might get to watch it in 2025 itself or possibly in the year following.
