Good Morning Britain presenter Adil Ray reveals he and Kate Garraway have bonded through grief after the passing of her husband Derek Draper

As I reflect upon the heartrending journey of Kate Garraway, my heart goes out to this remarkable woman who has faced more trials than most could bear in a lifetime. Her story is one of resilience, love, and unwavering hope that touches me deeply.

Adil Ray, co-host of Good Morning Britain, has shared insights into his close connection with his on-screen spouse Kate Garraway, explaining that they’ve found solace in each other amid shared sorrow.

Since I became an avid fan when Adil joined the ITV breakfast show back in 2019, I’ve been eagerly tuning in to catch his appearances. Since Piers Morgan’s exit in 2021 and Ben Shephard’s more recent departure, I’ve noticed that Adil has become a mainstay on the panel, and I can’t get enough of his insightful contributions!

Since they’ve been hosting shows together more frequently, the presenter openly discussed how they’ve grown closer as a team by supporting one another during challenging periods in their lives.

2021 has been a particularly challenging year for Kate, following the passing of her husband Derek Draper in January – nearly four years after he fell gravely ill with COVID-19 and experienced one of the most severe cases of the virus in the United Kingdom.

Over the past two weeks, Kate hasn’t been on the air due to her father, Gordon, experiencing a potential stroke and heart attack about a month ago.

In my own life, I’ve faced some personal struggles when I tragically lost my cherished mother, Nargis, to pancreatic cancer, mere months prior to Derek falling ill.

Her mother’s symptoms were identified later, as they were concealed by the Parkinson’s disease she was battling at the same time.

In the midst of dealing with my loss, I found solace in the compassionate presence of Kate, who was a colleague during the sad time when my mother passed away. I shared my grief with The Mirror.

A key advantage of performing together frequently is that you get to learn more about her, as you consistently observe her. It becomes clear just how busy she is.

I’m absolutely blown away! She’s both mom and dad right now, and let me tell you, it’s no walk in the park. On top of that, she’s going through a profound grief, and believe me, I feel that deeply with her.

As a lifestyle expert, I can’t help but share my excitement when I mention that I was genuinely thrilled when Ben decided to join This Morning. This move not only expanded our morning television family but also allowed for more collaboration between us on Good Morning Britain, specifically with the remarkable Kate.

Nargis, who was 73 years old, succumbed to cancer nine years following her Parkinson’s diagnosis.

As a fervent admirer, I found myself learning from Adil that her health concerns were initially attributed to Parkinson’s symptoms, leaving us all in suspense. However, subsequent examinations unveiled a heart-wrenching truth: she was battling stage four pancreatic cancer.

She was given six months to live, but sadly passed away after three.

The performer, well-known for his role on the humorous show Citizen Khan where he acted and penned the scripts, was particularly attached to his mother. He brought her along when he was awarded an OBE for contributions to broadcasting by Prince William during the 2016 Birthday Honors at Buckingham Palace.

Last month, it’s reported that Kate hurriedly left work just a few minutes following the conclusion of the ITV show, after receiving word that her father had fallen ill.

A source shared with The Sun that tragically, Kate’s father had a collapse earlier this week during their stay in Cornwall, alongside his wife and sister.

The situation was extremely alarming when they discovered him unresponsive, promptly transporting him to the hospital. Given his current condition, it appears probable that he may have suffered a stroke, along with a potential heart attack – medical professionals are currently conducting further examinations.

He’s still in the hospital and, at the moment, his condition is steady. However, considering the circumstances, this incident has undoubtedly scared his entire family, and they are earnestly hoping for his speedy recovery.

The source inside mentioned that Kate had planned to take a short break from television, which allows her to split her time between attending to her sick child and taking care of her kids Darcey and Billy at the hospital.

In January, Kate’s spouse, Derek Draper, passed away following a prolonged struggle against COVID-19. The virus severely impacted each organ within his body.

In the year 2005, Derek, a previous associate from the Labour party and a psychotherapist, tied the knot with Kate. Together, they later brought two kids, Darcey (aged 17) and Billy (aged 14), into their family.

2021 marked the time when, about a year following his Covid diagnosis, he managed to discharge from the hospital and head back to his residence in North London, under constant care.

Last summer, August 2022, found me admitted into the hospital due to sepsis, yet I managed to recover. Fast forward to early December 2023, I once more found myself in the same situation, this time experiencing a heart attack and being rushed to the hospital again.

Sadly, he couldn’t pull through the recent medical crisis, and on January 5th, Kate announced that Derek had passed away.

On social media, she shared that her husband passed away with their loved ones nearby, and she was by his side during his final prolonged moments.

She mentioned that his COVID-19 illness had caused permanent harm to his heart, resulting in additional health issues.

Kate additionally expressed gratitude to the medical staff for ensuring her loved one’s last moments were “peaceful and respectful.”
