As a lifestyle expert, I have to say the Golden Globes this year definitely had some memorable moments! But honestly, despite all the buzz, the show’s ratings continued to drop – it’s a trend we’re seeing with a lot of awards shows, and it’s something they really need to address.
As a longtime viewer, I was a little disappointed to hear that the 2026 ceremony, which CBS broadcast on Sunday, had about 7% fewer viewers compared to last year. Nielsen ratings, as reported by Deadline, confirmed the drop, and it’s something I noticed while watching – it just didn’t feel as packed with energy as usual.
This year’s awards show attracted 8.66 million viewers who watched it live or recorded it for same-day viewing. This is slightly lower than the 9.27 million who watched last year’s show live or on the same day.
As a big fan of awards shows, I was really interested to see the numbers for the Golden Globes pre-show, ET: Live on the Golden Globes Red Carpet. Nielsen reported that about 3.4 million people tuned in to watch it live or on the same day it aired, which is great to see!
Despite some standout moments, like Nikki Glaser’s opening monologue – which included a joke about President Trump and his administration – viewership numbers seem to be down this year.

The comedian made a joke referencing the documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. The Justice Department has only released a small portion of these files, and much of what has been released has been heavily censored, despite legal requirements to share more.
Glaser surprised the audience with a pointed joke about CBS, the network that aired the Golden Globes, and Bari Weiss, the recently appointed Editor-in-Chief of CBS News. He quipped that CBS News deserved an award for editing, sarcastically calling it ‘America’s newest place to see biased news,’ adding, ‘We really needed another one!’
The show featured some notable victories this year, such as Teyana Taylor’s win for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s highly praised film, One Battle After Another.
The 35-year-old singer was reduced to sobs of joy over her win early in the evening.
The awards also had some unexpected moments. Stellan Skarsgård won best supporting actor for the Norwegian film Sentimental Value, and Timothée Chalamet gave a lively acceptance speech after winning best actor in a musical or comedy – beating out well-known names like Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney, Ethan Hawke, and Jesse Plemons for his role in Marty Supreme.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following the Golden Globes closely, and I think some genuinely heartwarming and buzzworthy moments really helped boost this year’s ratings. Compared to the low point we saw in 2023, it’s clear those feel-good scenes made a difference and brought viewers back.
The show had its lowest viewership ever that year, with only 6.3 million viewers.
The Golden Globes appear to be stabilizing and may be in a better position than other major awards shows.

This year’s show had 8.66 million viewers, surpassing the 7.42 million who watched the 2025 Emmy Awards.
The 2025 Academy Awards significantly outperformed both the Golden Globes and the Emmys in terms of viewership. Last year’s Oscars broadcast attracted a massive 19.69 million viewers – more than the combined audience for both other award shows.
Okay, so everyone knows the Golden Globes are a huge deal, right? Like, they basically tell you who’s going to win at the Oscars! And the Oscars are on March 15th, which feels like forever away, but the Globes give you a really good idea of what’s going to happen. I’m already making my predictions based on who wins at the Globes – it’s practically a cheat code!
Viewership for this year’s Golden Globes awards show dropped, and Deadline suggests one reason might be that it didn’t air immediately after an NFL football game, which often boosts ratings.
The ceremony often gets a boost in viewers because football games usually finish around the time it begins, meaning many people simply stay tuned on the same channel.
While the perfect timing happened in 2025, this year’s game between the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars began at 1 p.m. ET. The time between the game ending and the Golden Globes starting might have caused viewers to switch channels or find other things to do.
Despite the boost from a football game leading into the broadcast, ratings weren’t guaranteed. Viewership for 2025 was still down 2% compared to the year before, even with the added sports coverage.
This year was particularly busy for television, with both Fox and NBC airing NFL games at the same time as the Golden Globes. This competition may have caused fewer people to tune in to CBS to watch the Globes.
Paramount Skydance, the company that owns CBS, seems very optimistic about the show. They reported that the Golden Globes generated 43 million social media mentions, setting a new record and increasing by 5% compared to last year.
