The 83rd Golden Globes was full of the usual sparkle and excitement, but viewers were puzzled by the songs played during the show.
The music featured popular songs from the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s, and it appeared some songs were specifically chosen to go with certain hosts.
Stellan Skarsgard, usually known for serious roles, provided a funny moment when he accepted his Best Supporting Actor award. As he walked on stage, Usher’s upbeat 2004 song ‘Yeah!’ was playing, creating a surprising and amusing contrast.
Macaulay Culkin, famous for ‘Home Alone,’ made a playful return to the Golden Globes after 35 years, with the song ‘Return of the Mack’ – a hit from 1996 by Mark Morrison – playing as he appeared.
As Jennifer Lopez came onstage to present, the song ‘Like Jennie’ by Korean artist Jennie was played.
Judd Apatow walked on stage to a remix of Rosé and Bruno Mars’s song ‘APT,’ which playfully incorporates a sound similar to his own name in the chorus.

Actors Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams playfully took the stage to the song ‘Pink Pony Club’ by Chappell Roan.
Paul Thomas Anderson won the award for Best Screenplay for his film, One Battle After Another, while the song “Party Rock” by LMFAO played.
During the awards show, Sabrina Carpenter’s cheerful song ‘Espresso’ was played as an interlude.
Commentators flocked to social media as they trolled the music choices at the ceremony.
One person joked on X that the musician who performed at the Golden Globes really wanted to be at a club instead.
Who’s picking the music for the Golden Globes? It all seems to be from the late 2000s and early 2010s – it’s a bit dated!
‘Playing usher for stellan was wild,’ another added.
‘The usher song for stellan was hilarious.’

‘Playing apt for judd apatow made me laugh ngl,’ someone else chimed in.
‘who’s in charge of music in the golden globes? return of the mack for macaulay culkin? really.’
‘What in the 2000s Spotify Playlist is happening with the walk-up music at the Golden Globes?’
‘WHO WAS IN CHARGE OF THE MUSIC?’ another person asked.
‘The commentators and music choices during the Golden Globes were….a choice.’
The Golden Globes are facing criticism for their music selections and shrinking award categories, and questions are being raised about the hosts. Just like the winners themselves, the show continues to be full of surprises.
‘Who’s got the aux at the Golden Globes because the music choices are so insane but elite!’
Golden Globe producer Ricky Kirshner recently told Variety that they chose upbeat, celebratory music for the winners because many of the nominated films had soundtracks that were more somber or sad.

There’s a distinction between simply teasing a comeback and fully announcing a return. Films like ‘Return of the Mack’ or projects associated with Judd Apatow were intentionally created to generate buzz and anticipation for future installments.
We decided not to play the theme songs for the winners this year, because they often use songs that have a sad or depressing tone, as he explained.
As Glenn Weiss explained, events are meant to be celebrations, but guests sometimes have to walk a long way – between one and a half to two minutes – to get to their seats, and the music played during that walk isn’t always upbeat.
The music played when winners walked up was just general party music, regardless of who won. However, the music played when presenters came on stage was specifically chosen based on who the presenter was.
