The nominations for the 83rd Golden Globe Awards were announced early Monday morning. In a busy awards season with a lot of uncertainty, one film stood out as a clear frontrunner: “One Battle After Another.”
Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, a complex story about former activists facing the realities of middle age and lost ideals, received a leading nine nominations from the Golden Globes. It was recognized in major categories like Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), directing, and writing, as well as several acting awards. This widespread support makes it the frontrunner and helps clarify a previously unpredictable Oscar race.
“One Battle After Another” is receiving widespread critical acclaim, having won major awards from several prominent groups including the Los Angeles and New York Film Critics, the Gotham Awards, and the National Board of Review. This consistent success is setting it apart from other films even before the official awards season begins.
The competition for best drama is remarkably international and unpredictable this year. Several filmmakers with large international audiences are in the running, including Jafar Panahi with his intense political drama “It Was Just an Accident,” Kleber Mendonça Filho with the Brazilian spy thriller “The Secret Agent,” and Joachim Trier with the emotionally resonant family drama “Sentimental Value.” They are joined by Guillermo del Toro’s passion project, a gothic take on “Frankenstein,” Chloé Zhao’s adaptation of “Hamnet,” and Ryan Coogler’s ambitious period film, “Sinners.”

Movies
The Golden Globe Award nominations were announced Monday on CBS.
The Golden Globes showcased a diverse range of comedies and musicals this year. Alongside Anderson’s film, nominees included the fast-paced and funny “Marty Supreme,” the quirky and unexpected “Bugonia,” the satirical South Korean film “No Other Choice,” and two films by Richard Linklater: the love letter to classic cinema “Nouvelle Vague” and the gentle, character-driven “Blue Moon,” featuring Ethan Hawke.
The Golden Globe acting nominations, as usual, balanced critically acclaimed performances with popular stars. Leonardo DiCaprio received a nomination for his role in the musical or comedy film “One Battle After Another.” The nominees for best dramatic actor included Michael B. Jordan (“Sinners”), Oscar Isaac (“Frankenstein”), and Dwayne Johnson (“The Smashing Machine”).
Jessie Buckley, Renate Reinsve, and Julia Roberts were the leading actresses nominated, with Buckley recognized for “Hamnet”, Reinsve for “Sentimental Value”, and Roberts for “After the Hunt”.
As a film buff, I was really pleased to see Anderson’s movie get some love for its supporting cast – Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, Chase Infiniti, and Teyana Taylor all deserved recognition. But honestly, “Sentimental Value” quietly swept me away – it snagged three nominations for supporting actors, and a total of eight nominations overall, which is fantastic to see!
Okay, let’s talk directing. This morning’s nominations felt pretty spot-on, grouping Wes Anderson, Ryan Coogler, Guillermo del Toro, Chloé Zhao, Joachim Trier, and Jafar Panahi together. Honestly, that list pretty much is the conversation we’ve been having all season about who’s giving the best direction. It felt like the Academy was listening to what the critics have been saying.

Awards
Wondering about the 2026 Golden Globe Awards? Here’s a guide to everything you need to know, including how to watch the nominations and who’s expected to be nominated.
The Golden Globes are still dealing with problems from recent years. A 2021 investigation by the Los Angeles Times found that the organization behind the awards had no Black members and faced questions about its ethics and finances. This led to criticism from the entertainment industry and caused NBC to cancel the 2022 broadcast of the show.
In 2023, California officials overhauled the Golden Globe Awards. They eliminated the organization that previously ran the awards (the HFPA), moved its charitable funds to a new foundation, and turned the awards show into a for-profit business owned by Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions. CBS began broadcasting the ceremony again last year and has committed to doing so for the next five years.
Despite attempts to move forward, the Golden Globes still faced criticism this year. The introduction of a new podcast category sparked controversy because the nominees were chosen using data from Luminate, a company co-owned by the same firms that own the awards themselves. The first nominees included popular podcasts like “SmartLess,” “Call Her Daddy,” “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard,” “Good Hang with Amy Poehler,” “The Mel Robbins Podcast,” and NPR’s “Up First.”
Some podcast professionals expressed concerns about the awards show’s structure and increasing focus on commercial interests. However, representatives from Penske Media said that the majority of podcasts who were eligible did choose to take part.
The award nominations arrive during a period of big changes in the entertainment industry. Just days before, Netflix announced it would buy Warner Bros., a move that would give even more power to streaming services and change the relationship between traditional studios and technology companies. This highlights that, despite all the shifts happening, awards are still a key way to gauge success.
The television nominations were quite diverse. Several shows received recognition in the drama category, including “The Pitt” and “The White Lotus” from HBO Max, “Severance” and “Pluribus” from Apple TV+, and “The Diplomat” and “Slow Horses” from Netflix and Apple, respectively. The comedy or musical series nominees included “Abbott Elementary,” “The Bear,” “Hacks,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and “The Studio.”
Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes aren’t decided by Academy voters, and they haven’t always been a reliable predictor of Oscar wins. However, this year’s nominations are helpful in understanding which films and performances are gaining the most momentum as awards season continues.
The Golden Globe Awards will air Jan. 11 on CBS, hosted by Nikki Glaser.
