Netflix’s latest movie cleverly combines the heartwarming styles of The Golden Girls and This Is Us, making it one of the most comforting films released this year. Great comfort movies and TV shows make us feel safe, familiar, and emotionally soothed, but they achieve this in different ways. The Golden Girls and This Is Us are excellent examples of how diverse those approaches can be.
Both The Golden Girls and This Is Us are incredibly comforting shows because they deal with genuine human emotions – both good and bad. They offer a sense of hope, even during difficult times, and highlight the importance of connection and support. They’re the kind of shows that make you appreciate the people you love. While they both share these qualities, they approach things differently. The Golden Girls is generally lighter in tone and centers around the power of friendship, while This Is Us is more emotionally intense, often exploring difficult experiences like trauma and complex family dynamics.
Although the story elements seem quite different, the new movie based on Shelby Van Pelt’s popular novel, Remarkably Bright Creatures, successfully combines them – and the result is fantastic.
Remarkably Bright Creatures Combines The Best Parts Of The Golden Girls & This Is Us
The group of friends in Remarkably Bright Creatures, known as the Knit Wits, is reminiscent of the beloved group in The Golden Girls. Though each woman has a distinct personality, they function as a close-knit, supportive family. They enjoy sharing stories, teasing each other, celebrating special occasions, and even offering dating advice.
They also support each other through tough times, helping each other cope with aging, sadness, and loss. It’s a deeply caring relationship. Even when Tova is withdrawn, the others consistently make an effort to be there for her.
Like the show This Is Us, the novel Remarkably Bright Creatures deeply explores family relationships and the pain of past losses. Both the main characters, Tova and Cameron, are dealing with difficult family histories. Tova is grieving the loss of her son, Erik, who died thirty years earlier, and also the recent passing of her husband.
Cameron had a difficult upbringing, marked by his mother’s struggles with substance use and her eventual death shortly before the film’s events begin. He’s now searching for his father. Like the show This Is Us, the movie tackles tough subjects, including the possibility of suicide for one character and Cameron’s challenging childhood.
The combination of The Golden Girls and This Is Us is surprisingly effective. Both shows explore similar themes, and their different styles complement each other – the humor of one offsets the more serious moments of the other, creating a powerful emotional experience without being overly depressing. As Molly Freeman from ScreenRant notes in her review of Remarkably Bright Creatures, the story is “ultimately about the goodness in people and how connecting with others can lead to a meaningful life.”
Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures Is The Ultimate Feel-Good Movie
Given the popularity of comforting shows like This Is Us and The Golden Girls, it’s easy to see why this new Netflix movie is such a heartwarming experience. It’s guaranteed to make you both laugh and cry, and it’s incredibly emotionally satisfying to watch.
Adding to its appeal, the actors in Remarkably Bright Creatures bring the characters to life in a way that makes them feel real and endearing. Their imperfections and unique qualities make them easy to connect with. Even if viewers haven’t shared the same experiences as Tova or Cameron, it’s simple to understand and feel for their struggles.
Now that you know what to expect, it’s time to get comfortable with a cozy drink and blanket, and enjoy a truly wonderful story. You might find yourself wanting to reread Remarkably Bright Creatures again and again – I certainly do!
