‘Golden Bachelor’ Gerry Turner reveals cancer led to abrupt divorce. His ex disagrees
As a seasoned observer of human drama and resilience, I find myself deeply moved by the story of Gerry Turner. This man, who seemed to have it all – fame, love, and a second chance at happiness – was suddenly faced with an unexpected and formidable adversary: cancer.
Beyond what appeared on the surface, the unexpected “Golden Bachelor” divorce had a deeper story. The beloved veteran of the ABC franchise, Gerry Turner, revealed that his battle with cancer was the reason for the sudden end of his marriage to Theresa Nist, who received the final rose.
In an interview with People on Tuesday, the 72-year-old disclosed that during their marriage, he was diagnosed with a rare type of bone marrow cancer. This diagnosis played a role in their choice to part ways. However, in a different conversation with the magazine, it seemed as though he disagreed with this assessment. (More details on this will follow.)
After revealing their separation in April, Turner and Nist stated that the main issue was geographical distance. They found it difficult to agree on where to reside, as they both wanted to remain close to their respective families in Indiana (Turner) and New Jersey (Nist), respectively.

Three short months after exchanging vows under the glare of public scrutiny, I found myself reporting that Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist made a shocking appearance on ‘Good Morning America’ to announce their separation. The swiftness of their union’s unraveling left me in a state of disbelief, much like the audience watching this real-life drama unfold.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel that this celebrity’s recent disclosure about their battle with cancer is likely to shed light on many uncertainties that swirled at the start of the year.
In conversation with Theresa, we were both making a sincere effort to determine our way of living, where we’d settle down, and figure out the logistics of our life together. Unfortunately, during this time, I received the difficult news that I had cancer.
In November 2023, the engaged pair from the “Golden Bachelor” finale had their wedding featured in a special on ABC. However, just three months later, they announced their separation on “Good Morning America.” On that very same day, Turner filed for divorce, bringing an end to their brief marriage with the financial services expert.

As a devoted fan of ABC’s romantic sagas, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming spinoff set to premiere on September 28. This time around, we follow the heartwarming story of Gerry Turner, a widower who dives into the world of Bachelor Nation in search of a new opportunity at love.
Turner mentioned that his diagnosis came after a three-year-old shoulder injury he got from teaching a pickleball class. However, he became engrossed in other activities and didn’t get it checked out until following his stint on the reality show. Later, his orthopedic surgeon suggested he consult another doctor due to “unusual blood readings” found in his lab work, which they initially thought might be related to a blood disorder.
The reality star said he was then diagnosed with Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia, a slow-growing bone marrow cancer. The Mayo Clinic says it’s a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that occurs when white blood cells turn into cancer cells and build up in the spongy material of the marrow.
Turner shared with People, “Regrettably, there’s no treatment available for this condition. This factor is a significant influence on every choice I make.” He continued, “It felt like a massive burden was suddenly placed upon me. For a time, I struggled to accept it; I didn’t want to acknowledge it.
The widower shared the perceived blood disorder news with Nist in February and underwent additional testing for a more definitive diagnosis. He told Nist in mid-March that it was cancer,. Their conversation was brief and she was understandably “a little bit awestruck” by the news, he said.
He expressed his desire for life to carry on as regularly as feasible. This inclination made him feel that a ‘normal’ life should involve spending time with family, specifically his two daughters, their partners, and granddaughters. However, he clarified that while finding a path with Theresa was still significant, it had become less urgent compared to family time.
Additionally, he resisted criticisms regarding their separation, considering them “unjust,” and referred to their brief time together as a “precious memory” which he regretted didn’t have a happier conclusion.

It’s possible that Gerry Turner was overly perfect, and Leslie Fhima’s response during their split and reunion on “The Golden Bachelor” brought a breath of fresh air to reality television shows.
He expressed his hope that others would now see in hindsight that the diagnosis significantly influenced his decisions and likely Theresa’s too. He added that he hoped they would reconsider their perspective, understanding that it might not have been a hasty, impulsive decision as some thought, but rather one driven by circumstances beyond immediate perception.
In response, Nist, aged 71, informed People that her former spouse’s diagnosis didn’t play a role in their split as far as she was concerned.
As for him, I’m not entirely sure if it played a role, but it doesn’t seem to be the main reason we parted ways. The distance between us certainly contributed, yet it wasn’t the sole factor. I won’t delve deeper into details, that’s all I can share.
In my perspective, as I pen this movie review, I find myself reminiscing about the inspiring tale of a man who’s not just any ordinary hero. You see, he’s juggling life with a hematology-oncology group in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and here’s the kicker – he’s determined to squeeze every last drop of fun out of it!
“[W]hen I’m gone, I’m gone, but I’m not going to have regrets,” he told the magazine.
