Gold Logie Winner Arrested? Fake News Scam Targets Larry Emdur

Television personality Larry Emdur, a well-known figure on Channel Seven, has recently become another Australian public figure targeted by an online image fraud.

The champion of the Gold Logie has found their likeness exploited across several fabricated news headlines, which appear as promoted content on Reddit.

As a die-hard fan, I’ve been scouring Reddit for any updates on my beloved Emdur, and lo and behold, an account named Fidelfromuruguay has shared what appears to be news stories about him, allegedly from ABC! Can’t wait to read more about my hero!

One photo depicts Emdur standing alongside several police officers, accompanied by the caption: ‘Could this mark the end of his career?’ However, Larry later expressed remorse over his statement, as he hadn’t realized the microphone was still active.

The account added: ‘How would you act in this situation,’ to the clickbait post.

A second post from the same account showed Larry apparently being interviewed on a podcast.

In simpler terms, the post suggests that Larry’s professional life is encountering significant hurdles, without him realizing it, as he forgot that the microphone was turned on.

Although the posts prominently displayed the ABC News emblem, the destination they led unwary Reddit users to was quite different from what it suggested.

Visitors would wind up on the website news18breaking.com, which was intentionally designed to mimic the layout of the ABC homepage.

The website published an untrue article, claiming it was penned by Alan Kohler, alleging that the Bank of Australia had initiated a lawsuit against Emdur due to his on-air remarks.

However the story was a thinly veiled advertisement for a get-rich-quick trading site.

The tale suggested that Emdur served as the anchor for Channel Seven’s Sunrise program, and it included a fabricated script of a dialogue between Emdur and his Seven Network co-worker, Natalie Barr, discussing a business named Stratice.

In the article, they stated that they requested assistance from the Sunrise team and successfully acquired the recording data for this specific program.

Please note that this article, similar to a live broadcast, could be removed instantly. As a precaution, if you’re reading this, consider clicking on the link shared personally by Mr. Larry Emdur.

It’s not the first time the Channel Seven star has been the target of an online scam.

In February 2024, Larry shared a message on Instagram to inform his followers about a post with a similar content that had been circulating online.

* In his post about the misleading news article, he mentioned that the link was being widely shared.*
* He noted in his post that the link to the false news story featuring Emdur (typed as Emdure) and Natalie Barr was being circulated everywhere.*
* The individual commented on a post regarding a bogus news article starring Emdur, which he misspelled as Emdure, and Natalie Barr. He stated that the link to this story was constantly being passed around.*
* In his post about a fake news piece featuring Emdur (written as Emdure) and Natalie Barr, he remarked that it seemed everyone was sharing the link.*

‘Please don’t click on it (or anything like it) it is complete and absolute bulls***. ‘

Larry rounded out his warning with a dose of his trademark humour.

If you’re interested in contributing to a genuine charity that I care deeply about, which isn’t a scam, please consider donating to The Larry Emdur Mortgage Appeal. The account details are with Central Bank of Panama. The account name is Happy As Inc, trading as Sylvie will never find this money Pty Ltd.

‘I know times are tough but thank you.’

Previously, the former host of Sunrise, David ‘Kochie’ Koch, criticized Meta (Facebook) in June, accusing them of neglecting to take down fraudulent ads that exploited his image.

In addition to billionaire Andrew Forrest and entrepreneur Dick Smith, Koch is involved in a legal action brought by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission against Meta, which was filed in 2022. The allegation is that Meta engaged in deceptive practices by permitting misleading advertisements, as reported by The Australian.

He expressed deep sorrow, lamenting the impact scams have on ordinary individuals, as it often drains their life savings.

Koch posed a question: “Given that Meta’s algorithms are capable of identifying inappropriate customer posts on its platforms, why isn’t there similar technology to filter out inappropriate ads and content as well?

The economist analogized swindlers to ‘modern-day drug traffickers,’ imploring platforms to reimburse affected parties or cease running these kinds of advertisements.

They’re only present for the purpose of defrauding people financially, with boiler room operations primarily based in the Philippines and Eastern Europe overseeing their activities.

It’s only fair that the platforms should either provide reparation for those who’ve been deceived by misleading ads, or take action to prevent such ads from being displayed on their platform.
