Goku’s Red Transformation: The Hidden Connection to Kaio-Ken
In the Dragon Ball series, the various Super Saiyan transformations are tightly connected. However, Super Saiyan 4 stands out significantly from its predecessors and successors. Unveiled by Goku in Dragon Ball DAIMA, this form deviates markedly from other Super Saiyan transformations, boasting a unique appearance and carrying a significant storyline.
In Dragon Ball Z, Goku’s Super Saiyan 4 transformation is distinct, but it has a strong link to his first new form, which was the power of Kaio-Ken. Prior to Goku mastering the Super Saiyan form, he fought utilizing the power of Kaio-Ken. Despite the obvious differences between Super Saiyan 4 and Kaio-Ken, there’s a bond that is often unnoticed.
Super Saiyan 4 Goku Shares Some of the Same Qualities as Kaio-Ken Goku
Both Super Saiyan 4 Goku and Kaio-Ken Goku Are Defined by the Color Red
In terms of appearance, Super Saiyan 4 is significantly different from the first three incarnations of Super Saiyan transformations. The original Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, and Super Saiyan 3 all share a common trait: their users develop spiky golden-blonde hair, larger muscles, and their eyes lose pupils. When it debuted in Dragon Ball GT, Super Saiyan 4 didn’t alter the user’s hair color or affect their pupils but instead gave them a red furry chest, tail, and new clothing. In Dragon Ball DAIMA, the transformation is similar, but it turns Goku’s hair to match his reddish-chest and makes his hands resemble those of an ape.
Red wasn’t a new color for Goku in either “Dragon Ball GT” or “Dragon Ball DAIMA”. In fact, it has always been Goku’s defining color, dating back to the original “Dragon Ball” manga where his Turtle School gi was red. The anime initially maintained this, but later switched to orange. However, when it comes to transformations, Goku first transformed into red with his first new form in “Dragon Ball Z”, specifically during the Kaio-Ken transformation.
The Kaio-Ken stands apart from all other transformations in the Dragon Ball series, being usable only briefly and causing harm to its user’s body as their power increases. This transformation surrounds its user with a red aura instead of altering their physical appearance. It has always been one of Goku’s most captivating abilities, making fans excited when it resurfaced in Dragon Ball Super. Now, Kaio-Ken is even more intriguing due to its similarities with the DAIMA version of Super Saiyan 4. In visual media, color choices are seldom accidental, and this is particularly true for high-quality anime. In action anime, bright red is almost always utilized to symbolize heroism, leadership, and intense passion.
In a similar vein, Akira Toriyama’s frequent muses, such as the Tokusatsu series like Super Sentai, hold equal relevance. Although Goku is often linked with orange, blue, and gold, red seems to suit him best among all colors, particularly in his toughest and most desperate battles depicted in Dragon Ball Z. The raw energy of Kaio-Ken in these moments mirrors Goku’s intensity and courage, embodying the essence of his hardships.
Though the risks in Dragon Ball DAIMA are significantly less than those in DBZ, Super Saiyan 4 Goku epitomizes the character at his most heroic. He fights against Gomah for the sole purpose of saving the Demon Realm, disregarding any thought of testing his strength, and willing to accept aid.
Super Saiyan God is Distinct From Goku’s Other Red Transformations
Goku’s Super Saiyan God Form Represents Him at His Calmest
In the storyline of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, it’s not just Super Saiyan 4 and Kaio-Ken that allow Goku to transform into a character with a red-tinted form. Instead, Goku unveiled his Super Saiyan God transformation. This form equips him with the power to compete against Beerus, and it’s characterized by a red-orange aura, dark red hair, and red eyes. Additionally, his eyes become more detailed, and his body becomes slimmer. However, contrary to what it may appear, Super Saiyan God doesn’t embody the same aspects as Kaio-Ken and Super Saiyan 4, since Goku didn’t achieve it through his own training or power development. Instead, the Super Saiyan God Ritual was responsible for creating this transformation, a fact that even Goku himself acknowledges.
In the anime, Goku and Vegeta only use the Super Saiyan God form against specific characters like Beerus, Broly, and competitors during the Tournament of Power, not out of heroism or passion. This transformation represents Goku moving into a divine realm and gaining an unprecedented level of power. However, it’s temporary as it serves as a stepping stone towards more powerful transformations such as Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego. Interestingly, the manga series “Dragon Ball DAIMA” suggests that Super Saiyan God is more of a natural progression for Goku rather than a groundbreaking change in a new direction.
As a die-hard Dragon Ball fan, I can’t help but get excited about DAIMA! This captivating tale unfolds between the epic battles of Dragon Ball Z and the futuristic adventures of Dragon Ball Super. So far, the storyline that bridges these two series remains shrouded in mystery for us fans.
In the climactic showdown against Gomah at the end of the anime, our hero, Goku, undergoes a remarkable transformation. With the assistance of the wise elder Namekian and resident of the Demon Realm, Neva, Goku transcends to Super Saiyan 4, a form that many might consider otherworldly due to its magical and demonic origins.
Though it’s later explained that Goku was already on the path to achieving this form, with Neva merely providing the final nudge he needed, it’s still an intriguing transformation. What follows is a fascinating progression, as Goku transitions from Super Saiyan 4 to Super Saiyan God, maintaining his fiery red hue but shifting his energy source from demonic ki to divine god ki. This shift in power and form promises even more thrilling battles ahead!
Goku Being Draped in Red Makes Him a Better Foil For Vegeta
Rivals Clad in Red and Blue Are an Anime Staple
As Dragon Ball progresses, the dynamic between Goku and Vegeta – initially a fierce rivalry but now a strong partnership – has become increasingly significant. In Dragon Ball Super, their relationship stands out as the most crucial in the entire series. Just like oranges contrast beautifully with Vegeta’s primary color of blue, a more traditional red and blue pairing would symbolize them even more effectively.
In various genres like anime, media influenced by anime, Tokusatsu, and others, the colors red and blue are often used to highlight contrasting characters with opposing personas. Red characters tend to be impassioned, noble, charismatic, and sometimes a bit reckless, while their cooler-tempered, more reserved, intelligent, and flawed counterparts are usually depicted in blue. Characters like Ryuko and Satsuki from “Kill la Kill” and Natsu and Gray from “Fairy Tail” exemplify this pattern. Interestingly, Goku, a popular character, is not typically shown in red despite his role as the passionate rival to Vegeta.
In their initial clash, Goku showcased his signature application of Kaio-Ken, a move that greatly enhanced his power. With Goku appearing rugged and outmatched against the haughty Vegeta dressed in royal blue garb, the contrast was striking. Regrettably, neither of their subsequent battles have replicated this dynamic due to its unique impact. Fans would have appreciated seeing Goku employ Kaio-Ken more often, especially since he stopped using it after becoming a Super Saiyan, an issue that has been a topic of debate for many years. Adhering to the manga’s color scheme would have made the contrast between their outfits even more vivid, as Goku would have worn red and black while Vegeta donned blue and white.
In Dragon Ball, the addition of Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue allowed Goku and Vegeta to be distinguished by red and blue transformations initially. However, instead of making Super Saiyan Blue just Vegeta’s version of Super Saiyan God, they created a new transformation with no functional differences. This missed opportunity means that now Goku is associated with white and Vegeta with purple forms. The only way to revive this idea might be if Vegeta obtains his own canon form of Super Saiyan 4, along with a unique design for it.
There might appear to be little connection between Super Saiyan 4 and Kaio-Ken, but upon closer examination, there’s a richer depth than meets the eye. The use of color is significant in anime, and the fact that Goku is depicted in red during these transformations rather than any other hair color like blonde, white, or blue, is a much more suitable choice. Let’s hope that having multiple Ultra Instinct versions won’t prevent Goku from utilizing his red transformations in the future.
