Goku’s Heart Weakness: Villains’ Favorite Target and His Biggest Fragility
In most prominent characters from the series, conventional vulnerabilities are seldom present; instead, they often lose against villains who are simply stronger. As a child, Goku was different due to his incapacitation by anyone who could grab his tail. However, since training with Kami, he has overcome this issue. Yet, a more hidden weakness that he’s carried throughout his journey remains relevant today.
Goku is renowned for his pure heart, yet it’s also been shown as a vulnerable point. Incredibly, many villains have managed to defeat Goku by exploiting this weakness, and at times, even Goku’s own heart has come close to causing his demise. Symbolically speaking, Goku’s kind-heartedness has resulted in multiple instances where he narrowly escaped death or even met his end.
Goku’s Heart is Constantly Being Injured by His Enemies
Goku Was Killed by a Heart Virus in Future Trunks’ Timeline
Throughout my observation of Goku’s battles against formidable foes, I’ve noticed that his heart has been under constant threat. His first significant defeat outside a tournament setting was at the hands of Mercenary Tao, who nearly ended Goku’s life by striking his heart with a Dodon Ray. Remarkably, Goku survived this encounter thanks to an unlikely savior – a Four-Star Dragon Ball hidden beneath his shirt that somehow blocked the attack.
Fast forward through two story arcs, and Freeza, not Tao, successfully halted Goku’s heart; it’s a mystery how Goku managed to survive beyond pure chance. Yet, it wasn’t the last time Goku would recover from severe heart damage.
At the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, Piccolo Jr., in a cruel twist, tries to puncture Goku’s heart, only to spectacularly miss every crucial spot. For now, Goku’s heart escapes harm until the Cell Saga of Dragon Ball Z, where it exacts its revenge. In an alternate timeline depicted by Future Trunks, however, a virus claimed Goku’s life, leading to the demise of other Z-Fighters at the hands of Future Androids 17 and 18, ultimately ending the world. In the primary timeline, Goku manages to outlive his heart virus with medication, but not without taking a pounding from Android 19 first.
In Dragon Ball Super, it’s clear that the antagonists have a particular fondness for targeting Goku’s heart during their attacks. For instance, during the Resurrection ‘F’ Saga, we see how exposed Goku can be when he lowers his guard, as Sorbet manages to shoot a laser ring straight through his chest. Later on, in various arcs, opponents such as Moro and Granolah exploit this vulnerability, inflicting some of the most significant damage ever seen in the series by striking Goku’s heart region.
Goku’s Big Heart Has Been Exploited Multiple Times
Goku’s Kindness Leads to Him Showing Compassion When He Shouldn’t
Goku’s pure heart has always been a fundamental aspect of his character. It allows him to ride the Flying Nimbus and transform into a Super Saiyan. However, this trait has also led him into danger throughout his life, including during both of his deaths in Dragon Ball Z.
In other words, it’s due to Goku continually yielding to his older brother’s entreaties for leniency and pledges to improve, that he finds himself in a predicament where he must relinquish his life. If events had unfolded as intended, Piccolo wouldn’t have needed to shoot Goku with the Special Beam Cannon. Regrettably, during the Cell Saga, Goku meets his end at the hands of a self-destructing Cell. This grim outcome is a consequence of Goku’s straightforward character preventing him from fully grasping and relating to Gohan, leading to the disastrous strategy he devises to vanquish Cell.
Despite Frieza’s ruthless nature, he never inflicts critical damage on Goku’s heart, yet their final battle on Namek still puts Goku’s heart under significant strain. Initially, the strain was so intense it threatened to strip Goku of his humanity. The struggle to keep his humanity intact is a far greater challenge for Goku than defeating Frieza at this stage, and he manages to overcome the impact of the transformation on his heart by choosing to show compassion towards Frieza.
Throughout his lifetime, it’s challenging not to identify recurring problems for Goku that stem from his heart. While it contributes to his unique character, it also exposes him to significant risks, both physically and emotionally. As long as he has Senzu Beans and things work out favorably in the end, though, Goku is unlikely to give this aspect much thought.
