Goku & Uub’s Bond Sets the Stage; Vegeta & Cabba Show How Mentorship Shapes Legends
Akira Toriyama’s manga, Dragon Ball, showcases remarkable individual achievements, highlighting each character’s unique abilities. Notably, Dragon Ball emphasizes the idea that it’s more beneficial to collaborate and share knowledge with others instead of using power selfishly. Characters like Goku, Gohan, and many other powerful ones in Dragon Ball wouldn’t have reached their current levels without wise mentors who honed their skills and encouraged them to reach new pinnacles. This underscores the strong bond between a mentor and their student as one of Dragon Ball’s core themes.
In many instances, these bonds are portrayed as stronger than the bond between a parent and child. In the series Dragon Ball, training represents trust, which is evident when Goku develops an affection for Uub’s abilities and chooses to mentor him. Although the relationship between Goku and Uub holds great potential, it is often viewed as one of Dragon Ball’s missed opportunities. However, the flaws in Goku and Uub’s bond have paved the way for Dragon Ball Super to revisit the concept more effectively through Vegeta and Cabba.
Goku Taking Uub Under His Wing Brings His Story Back Full Circle
Dragon Ball Z Ends With Goku & Uub Becoming the Next Master Roshi & Kid Goku
Training has been a recurring theme since the inception of Dragon Ball, making it captivating to witness Goku’s growth from childhood to adulthood and his emergence as a mentor for future heroes. For much of Dragon Ball Z, this development is seen in Gohan, Goku’s son, and later in his guidance of Goten and Trunks during the Buu Saga. During this time, Goku firmly believes that Goten and Trunks are Earth’s best hope for survival. This same dynamic continues in Dragon Ball GT when Pan, his granddaughter, comes into play. These training sessions and familial bonds are crucial, given that they all share a common legacy to some degree. It is only natural that Goku would strive to make his family as powerful as himself.
A key point is Goku’s choice to aid an outsider, Uub, above his friends and family, which demonstrates a remarkable act of kindness. This encounter takes place at the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament, where Goku is captivated by Uub’s raw power right from the start. Recognizing that Uub is the kind-hearted reincarnation of Kid Buu, he sees a unique opportunity to help someone with such power at such a young age harness it effectively. Uub doesn’t show any signs of being influenced by dark tendencies or having Kid Buu’s essence within him. Instead, he solidifies his position as a worthy successor by riding on the Flying Nimbus.
The development of Uub under Goku’s guidance is rich enough to form an entire series or even just a storyline, making it disappointing that Dragon Ball eventually changes course on this. Interestingly, in the beginning of Dragon Ball GT, Uub is still learning from Goku, suggesting they have been together for five years. However, as the series progresses, Goku and Uub spend less time together, although they do occasionally fight side by side and it’s clear how much Uub has absorbed from Goku. Yet, Uub’s fusion with Buu is emphasized more as a major improvement.
Intriguing aspects of the storyline unfold outside the screen during the series, particularly in Dragon Ball Super. Unfortunately, this show gets stuck in a challenging predicament because it can’t use Uub extensively, especially alongside Goku. The positioning of Dragon Ball Super within the larger Dragon Ball timeline creates an unfavorable situation for Uub, making substantial growth under Goku’s tutelage nearly impossible – at least for now in this franchise. Their relationship’s development has been halted and largely left up to viewers’ imaginations.
Vegeta Mentoring Cabba Proves How Much The Prince of All Saiyans Has Grown Since DBZ
Vegeta Recognizes Cabba’s Potential As He Puts Another Saiyan Before Himself For The First Time
Dragon Ball Super broadened the universe’s horizons by incorporating a multiverse, providing numerous chances for engaging narratives and formidable adversaries. The multiverse is home to a wide array of characters, yet Universe 7’s counterpart – Universe 6 – still harbors a lively Saiyan community. This allows for the introduction of fresh faces, among them one who stands out the most and makes a lasting impact on Vegeta. Vegeta initially encounters Cabba during the Tournament of Destroyers. Although Cabba’s power pales in comparison to Vegeta, their encounter unintentionally transforms into a spontaneous training session.
Through observation, Vegeta recognizes a similarity between himself and Cabba, which he utilizes to guide Cabba into channeling his anger constructively and turning it into power. This moment marks the first appearance of Super Saiyan Cabba, filling Vegeta with a sense of pride for what he considers an unofficial pupil. While Vegeta and Cabba do not formally train together, their battles during the Tournament of Destroyers and the Tournament of Power provide Cabba with new abilities like the Galick Cannon and Final Stream, as well as two Super Saiyan transformations. In light of this, it can be argued that Cabba’s achievements are even more remarkable compared to Uub’s learning under Goku, despite the fact they have less time together (and considering their training sessions take place in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber where time passes slower).
In my observation, the way Vegeta fights has a profound impact on Cabba, and it’s evident when he resurrects some of Vegeta’s iconic moves for Universe 6. This act of mentorship is not just about sharing techniques, but it speaks volumes about their bond, which developed strongly despite their brief time together. If they had crossed paths earlier, say before the Tournament of Power, their relationship could have been even more profound. Such an encounter would not only deepen our understanding of Vegeta’s actions during the tournament but also showcase how much both characters have grown.
Above all, Vegeta pledges to journey to Universe 6 and aid Cabba, as well as the entire Saiyan race, in improving their combat skills and evolving as warriors. This is a development that fans have longed for, but it appears to be a plotline that hasn’t been fully realized in Dragon Ball Super. The challenge of traveling between universes might account for this unrealized reunion between Vegeta and Cabba. Whis may grant permission for this encounter, but it should be handled judiciously and might necessitate an extended stay from one party in the opposite universe.
Dragon Ball Still Has Lots Of Room To Grow In This Mentor-Student Department
Dragon Ball Super’s Future & Endgame Could Provide Catharsis Here
Watching Vegeta’s bond with Cabba unfold feels like a deeper, richer development compared to what Dragon Ball GT tried with Goku and Uub. Nevertheless, there’s still potential for both friendships to grow further, aligning beautifully with the core principles of Dragon Ball before the story concludes. Interestingly, Dragon Ball Super’s manga is moving steadily towards a point where another encounter between Goku and Uub might occur, opening up possibilities for a more satisfying training arc. Moreover, whispers about Pan’s recent transformation have sparked speculation among fans.
Both characters can flourish without any issue – Pan can carry on learning under Piccolo, honoring the mentor-like bond between Piccolo and Gohan, while Goku trains with Uub. Furthermore, another Tournament of Power could serve as an excellent platform for Vegeta and Cabba’s partnership to develop further. Vegeta might inspire Cabba to unleash Super Saiyan 3 following his own breakthrough in Dragon Ball DAIMA. In addition, a second Tournament of Power would provide an ideal opportunity for Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo to intensify their training with the upcoming generation of heroes, offering a fittingly triumphant conclusion to the Dragon Ball series that underscores Goku and Vegeta’s indelible legacies.
