Godzilla Minus One sequel gets intriguing official title – here’s what it could mean

The sequel to the acclaimed film Godzilla Minus One is coming, and we now know its official title: Godzilla Minus Zero. This new title is quite intriguing, and fans are already wondering what it signifies.

A simple reason for the title could be that it just follows the numbering pattern – sequels usually increase the number by one – and the minus sign is retained to keep the brand familiar.

This might also connect to speculation that the new movie will be a remake of the original Godzilla film, or take place shortly before its events – that first film came out over 70 years ago.

The first film took place in 1954, the year it came out, but Minus One is primarily set in 1947. As for Minus Zero, we haven’t learned when that story happens yet.

Takashi Yamazaki, the writer and director, revealed some time ago that the title Minus One was chosen for a specific reason: the film takes place before the events of the first movie.

He explained that the story’s most important theme is the resilience of the Japanese people after the war, facing incredible hardship, and then being confronted with Godzilla, which only amplified their struggles and created even more tragedy.

With Yamazaki directing the new film, Minus Zero, it’s probably going to explore similar ideas to his previous work. However, until we know the plot, it’s hard to say for sure.

Someone on Reddit pointed out that ‘zero’ in Japanese culture can symbolize death, and then connected this to the fact that ‘Monster Zero’ is another name for the character King Ghidorah.

Someone thought it might be related to military operations, mentioning countdowns like ‘T-0 seconds,’ which reminded them of the original 1954 Godzilla movie and existing theories about it.

Fans reacted to the new logo playfully, pointing out that the ‘O.O’ could be seen as either a shocked face emoji or the word ‘GOO’ when combined with the ‘G’.

Some fans suggested a sequel titled ‘Godzilla Plus One,’ imagining it would center around a wedding. One person even made a very specific, and humorous, reference to the Pet Shop Boys, joking about wanting to see a movie called ‘Godzilla Divided By Zero’.
