Takashi Yamazaki’s next big project just took a major step forward.
As a huge fan of Godzilla Minus One, I’m so excited to hear more about Takashi Yamazaki’s next project! He’s officially taking on a big-budget English-language film called Grandgear, and Sony just announced at CinemaCon that it’s hitting theaters on February 18, 2028. Apparently, they’re starting production really soon, which is awesome!
The first glimpse of the movie is incredibly exciting, suggesting a huge, epic story. At a recent event, viewers saw quick shots of giant robots fighting in a city, followed by the movie’s logo. Though the teaser is short, it shows director Yamazaki bringing his realistic style to a large-scale story about mechs. While the cast and full plot are still secret, the initial footage promises a spectacular sci-fi experience.
Ever since late 2024, this project has been highly anticipated, with multiple studios competing to acquire it before Sony ultimately won. The project is a significant partnership between Sony and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, with both companies producing it alongside Glen Zipper.
Yamazaki’s new film, Grandgear, follows the massive success of Godzilla Minus One. That film was a global phenomenon, earning over $113 million worldwide with a $15 million budget and even winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects – a first for the Godzilla series. Godzilla Minus One also became the highest-grossing Japanese film ever released in North America.
Yamazaki is writing and directing Grandgear, his most ambitious and internationally focused project to date. The initial footage suggests he’s aiming for a much larger scale than anything he’s done before.
