This year marks the 70th anniversary of the iconic monster Godzilla, and Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas is celebrating with a special edition popcorn bucket! Created in 1954 by director Ishirō Honda and his team, Godzilla has become a pop culture legend through decades of movies, TV shows, and video games. Having appeared in 38 films – including five made in America – Godzilla’s lasting impact is truly remarkable. While Japan has already been celebrating this milestone, fans in North America can now join the fun with this unique collectible.
The horror news site Bloody Disgusting shared a photo of a new Godzilla popcorn bucket online. The bucket is designed to look like Godzilla’s head, specifically as he appeared in the classic Showa era films. The long-running Godzilla series has been divided into different periods – Showa, Heisei, Millennium, and Reiwa – and also includes the more recent “Monsterverse” films made with Legendary Pictures. This bucket is 12 inches tall and holds popcorn in Godzilla’s open jaw. It’s similar to a shark-shaped bucket Alamo Drafthouse released earlier this year for the movie Jaws.

The year-long celebration of Godzilla’s 70th anniversary, which began last November, featured a variety of events. These included re-releases of the recent film Godzilla Minus One, showings of classic movies like the original 1954 Godzilla, a newly remastered 4K version of Shin Godzilla, and special merchandise. Now, with Alamo Drafthouse releasing a commemorative popcorn bucket, the festivities appear to be wrapping up. Alamo Drafthouse also hosted a special screening of The Return of Godzilla (1984) as part of the celebration, offering a unique T-shirt alongside tickets.
Even though the Godzilla series began decades ago, it’s still going strong! Two new movies are currently in the works. The first, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is the next chapter in the Monsterverse, bringing Godzilla and King Kong together again to face a new enemy. Meanwhile, Toho, the original creators of Godzilla, have begun production on a sequel to the critically acclaimed Godzilla Minus One, titled Godzilla Minus Zero, with the same director, Takashi Yamazaki, at the helm.
Following the success of the 2023 Academy Award-winning film Godzilla Minus One, the new movie Godzilla Minus Zero promises to be even bigger and bolder. Minus One surprised everyone with its critical and commercial success, demonstrating that Godzilla can deliver both meaningful stories and exciting blockbuster action.
