Thor will appear quite differently in the new God of War series from Amazon MGM. For more than ten years, Chris Hemsworth has been the face of the Norse god in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, this upcoming series, based on the 2018 video game God of War where Kratos battles Norse gods, will present its own unique take on Thor, and the producers have cast an actor to bring that vision to life.
According to Deadline, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, the Icelandic actor known for his role as Mr. Drummond in the Apple TV+ series Severance, will play Thor in the upcoming God of War adaptation. He’s also appeared in several other TV shows like NOS4A2, Emerald City, and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Ólafsson’s film credits include The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Last Witch Hunter, and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, and he previously played the villain Drago in a live-action How to Train Your Dragon film. Beyond acting, he’s also a voice actor, providing the Icelandic dubbing for popular animated movies like Lilo & Stitch, Kung Fu Panda, and Ice Age.

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson is the latest addition to a fantastic cast. Ryan Hurst, known for playing Thor in God of War Ragnarök, will star as Kratos. Teresa Palmer will portray Phoebe/Sif, who is Thor’s wife and an Earth goddess. Jamie Alexander, who has played Sif in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the original Thor movie in 2011, returns to the role. Max Parker will play Heimdall, the guardian of Asgard and one of Odin’s sons – a role previously played by Idris Elba in the MCU.
The upcoming God of War series is being created by Ronald D. Moore, the creative force behind shows like Battlestar Galactica and Outlander. The first two episodes will be directed by Frederick E. O. Toye, an Emmy winner known for his work on Shōgun. While a release date hasn’t been announced yet, the series will be available to stream on Prime Video.

Prime Video is continuing its push into video game adaptations with the announcement of a God of War series. This follows the success of Fallout, which is nearing the end of its second season, and the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot starring Sophie Turner and developed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. With these three titles – Fallout, Tomb Raider, and God of War – Prime Video is quickly becoming a major player in bringing popular video games to the small screen.
