Glen Powell is part of a growing pattern in his acting career with his role in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. While the 2023 film The Super Mario Bros. Movie featured a lot of characters from the Mario games, the upcoming 2026 sequel will include even more.
Brie Larson will play Princess Rosalina, with Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Luiz Guzman as Wart, Issa Rae as Honey Queen, and Donald Glover as Yoshi joining the cast. Beyond the familiar faces from the Mario universe, the film is also bringing in characters from other popular Nintendo games.
Fox McCloud, the famous intergalactic pilot from the Star Fox series and a popular character in the Super Smash Bros. games, is making his first appearance in a movie. Actor Miles Powell provides the voice for Fox, and he’s a great fit for the role, having experience with similar characters.
Fox McCloud Is The Latest Pilot Played By Glen Powell
Glen Powell had been working as an actor for years, but he gained widespread recognition after appearing in the 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick. He played Jake “Hangman” Seresin, a Navy pilot who forms a competitive relationship with Miles Teller’s character, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw. Though initially presented as somewhat of a rival, Powell’s charm shines through, and Hangman ultimately becomes a heroic figure in the movie.
The recent blockbuster film was a major success for Powell, but it wasn’t his first time playing a pilot. He previously played astronaut John Glenn in the movie Hidden Figures. Glenn was a historical figure – a real-life pilot who became the first American to orbit the Earth.
Following his role in Maverick, Powell returned to the skies in the 2022 film Devotion. The movie tells the true story of Jesse Brown, played by Jonathan Majors, a pioneering Black pilot in the U.S. Navy. Powell portrayed Tom Hudner, a fellow naval pilot who became friends with Brown during the Korean War.
Even though he’s only providing the voice for Fox, Powell is a great fit for the character. He’s skilled at playing similar roles – cool, courageous heroes – as demonstrated by the pilots he’s portrayed in other movies.
Powell Has Had Plenty Of Success Playing Pilots
Top Gun: Maverick was a huge success in 2022, becoming the second-highest-grossing film of the year with almost $1.5 billion earned globally. Critics loved it too, giving it a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was also recognized by the Academy Awards, receiving six nominations – including for Best Picture – and winning an Oscar for Best Sound.
The film Hidden Figures also received significant awards attention, earning three Academy Award nominations in 2017, including one for Best Picture. Released in 2016, this historical drama was both a critical and financial success, bringing in over $235.9 million globally and receiving a 93% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Although Devotion didn’t earn a lot at the box office, critics generally liked it, giving it an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Super Mario Bros. Movie received more mixed reviews, with a 45% critic score. Despite this, the first Mario movie made $1.4 billion, and the sequel is expected to be very successful in theaters as well.
