Glen Powell’s new sports drama Chad Powers is now available on streaming. As a new American TV series focused on sports, it’s naturally being compared to the incredibly popular Ted Lasso. But, the reviews haven’t been very kind when making those comparisons…
The show stars Powell as Russ Holliday, a famous athlete. During a disastrous game, he has a major outburst, damaging his reputation and forcing him to retreat from public life.
He makes up his mind to return to playing sports, but feels he needs a fresh start, so he creates a new persona. Using extensive makeup and a wig, he transforms himself into Chad Powers and tries out for a struggling team.

The first two episodes are currently available on Disney+ (and Hulu in the United States). The following four episodes will be released weekly on Tuesdays throughout October.

Reviews are now available, and critics have mixed opinions. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 55% positive rating based on 29 reviews collected so far.
A frequent observation in the reviews is that this show isn’t designed to be a comforting or uplifting experience-whether that’s a good thing or not.
Though this silly sports comedy might seem like a repeat of Ted Lasso, Powell manages to make the unusual story genuinely funny, touching, and even a little awkward – all in a way that’s completely captivating,” said The Guardian in a favorable review.
“The show’s creators seem to have asked: ‘What if we made a version of Ted Lasso, but meaner?'” The Telegraph stated, adding: “The writers could have gone in one of two directions: sweet or cynical. Instead, they’re stranded in the middle. It’s definitely not family fare.”

According to a review in The Standard, Powell delivers a fantastic performance as Powers, just as strong as his portrayal of Russ Holliday. The review notes the ending is a little unsatisfying, but understands it sets up a second season, which is something to look forward to. Ultimately, the reviewer believes the show successfully fills the void left by Ted Lasso.
TVGuide described the show as “surprisingly grim, which actually enhances its appeal,” and Variety noted it was “somewhere between a short skit and a complete television series.”
The first two episodes of Chad Powers is available now on Disney+ and Hulu in the US.
