Fans of the show Glee were confused and surprised by Matthew Morrison’s strange performance of spoken-word poetry.
A video of the 45-year-old actor – best known for his role as Will Schuester in the popular TV show that aired from 2009 to 2015 – recently went viral after a fan shared a clip of an unusual performance.
So offbeat was the moment that the fan captioned the clip: ‘nurse he’s out again.’
The video seems to be a short preview of Morrison’s upcoming show, Rhythms & Revelations. In it, he performs his unique poetry on stage with a live band, dressed in a traditional outfit, at what looks like a small club.
He started, moving slightly towards the microphone with each phrase, saying, ‘You share your experiences, your feelings, your authentic self… and you want everyone else to do the same.’
He paused for a moment, then said, ‘But sometimes things don’t go as planned,’ before accidentally dropping the microphone stand on his own foot. The audience remained completely silent, and many viewers commented that they thought people were afraid to laugh.
The performance clearly surprised, and even disturbed, some viewers. One person commented, suggesting the video should have included a warning because it was startling.
Another leaned into the cringe, writing, ‘It kills me that he’s just…like this in real life.’
Some were outright freaked, posting, ‘MY IRRATIONAL FEAR IS MATTHEW MORRISON.’
Meanwhile, the Justin Timberlake comparisons came fast and furious.
I keep seeing everyone talk about how Temu’s ads remind them of Justin Timberlake! One person put it perfectly – it’s like they’re totally designed with that Justin Timberlake vibe, and honestly, I totally agree. It’s a ‘Temu Justin Timberlake’ situation all the way!
People playfully pointed out that the role of Will Schuester on Glee was originally intended for Justin Timberlake. Since he was too busy to take the part, they ended up casting someone else—a ‘generic’ version of Timberlake, as some joked.
Someone else commented that he seems to think he’s like Justin Timberlake, but it’s just not coming across that way.
This strange video of spoken-word poetry appears almost three years after Morrison publicly addressed accusations of misconduct while on So You Think You Can Dance, stating he had ‘nothing to hide.’
He lost his job as a judge on the Fox show in June 2022 following accusations of an improper relationship with a contestant.
He quickly responded to the issue on Instagram by posting a copy of the message he’d sent to the dancer.
Morrison expressed disappointment at having to correct false and anonymous claims made about her and her family, emphasizing she has nothing to conceal.
Just so everyone knows what happened, I want to share the exact message I sent to one of the dancers: “Hey, it’s Matthew. If you’re okay with it, I’d like to get your number and chat about a few things.” That’s it.
He explained the text was meant to help a mutual colleague land a job on the show.
He explained that he reached out because both he and the dancer admired a choreographer he’d known for more than two decades, and he wanted to help her get a job on the show.
Morrison criticized a culture driven by gossip, arguing it’s harmful to society and we must strive for better communication.
He also emphasized that he doesn’t want this situation to overshadow the show, as dance is a powerful force for bringing people together and promoting well-being. He sincerely wishes all the contestants and his fellow judges success.
His wife, Renee Puente, who he shares two children with, shared his video and wrote about how proud she was that he was finally able to share his side of the story with grace and honesty, despite a very difficult and complicated situation.
In April 2022, Nigel Lythgoe announced he was leaving So You Think You Can Dance, explaining that he hadn’t followed the show’s rules during the audition process and finalist selection. This made it impossible for him to judge the competition fairly.
It was a real honor to be a judge on So You Think You Can Dance, so I’m very sorry to say that I’m leaving the show.
He expressed deep regret for the situation and said he’ll be watching the upcoming season with everyone else, confident it will be fantastic.
Matthew explained that his experience working on Broadway shows gave him the right qualifications to be a judge.
I started out breakdancing when I was very young. Later, I trained in ballet, tap, and jazz, and my first jobs on Broadway were as a dancer before I moved into leading roles.
I started in the chorus and gradually worked my way up to bigger roles on Broadway. I believe my training and experience are comparable to everyone else’s.
If that strange video offers a glimpse of Morrison’s upcoming solo concert, you can see the complete show, titled Rhythms & Revelations, at 54 Below in New York City this winter. More performances are scheduled in other cities through spring 2026.
