Gladiators’ Comet Opens Up About Near Paralysis and the Fight to Overcome Tragedy

On BBC last year, the iconic figure of the gladiator world, Comet, shared deeply about her heart-wrenching accident and overcoming it by standing tall once more and moving forward with determination.

But the former gymnast, 29, credited the horrific injury as the ‘reason I am where I am today’.

Originally named Ella-Mae Rayner, the contestant on the TV show had to withdraw due to a traumatic incident involving a 30-foot fall from The Wall, which almost left her unable to move.

The person competing on the TV show, whose real name is Ella-Mae Rayner, had to stop participating because they fell about 30 feet from The Wall and nearly couldn’t move after that incident.

Discussing the upcoming final on Saturday, the former cheerleader commented: ‘Being a Gladiator involves more than just physical tests.’

There’s a multitude of mental hurdles as well, but despite my injury, I had to gather myself, take a deep breath, and move forward with determination.

Acknowledging her family’s constant support, she remarked, “Much of my resilience can be attributed to the structured training of gymnastics that I received early on. However, an equally significant part of it is due to my mother and my brother.

My mother has been a tremendous source of support, encouragement, and inspiration for me. She has made countless sacrifices to ensure I have the best possible life, and her selflessness was particularly evident during our family’s difficult period. She also played a crucial role in helping my brother and me navigate through that challenging time.

‘When you go through something that traumatic, you either break or it makes you.’

‘I think about that every day, and it is deep down without doubt the reason I am where I am today.’

The gym-fanatic was also quick to double down on why muscular can also mean girly. 

Contrary to popular belief, having a muscular physique does not automatically make a woman appear masculine. This misconception has been widespread in the past.

‘I have muscles but I’m a proper girly girl.’

She added: ‘I love shopping, I love beauty, I love fashion and getting all dressed up.

‘But I also love being powerful, being strong, muscular.

‘That doesn’t stop a girl from being a princess.

It’s been mentioned that my performance in Duel, one of the show’s key events, is particularly strong. You might assume it’s a contest suited for someone with a larger build and greater physical strength. However, appearances can be deceiving.

‘There’s a range of different bodies on this show, and different fitness types, and that’s amazing.

Comet concluded, emphasizing that each person is unique in their own way, with distinct body shapes, sizes, and muscle masses. It’s crucial to embrace this diversity and strive to be the best version of ourselves at all times.
